Vocational center to get roofing upgrade

The vocational center behind Hartselle Junior High School will soon get a roofing upgrade.

The Hartselle Board of Education approved a $120,000 contract with Lathan Associates Architects to design the re-roofing project for the center.

Justin Wyatt of Lathan Associates Architects said his company offers infrared scanning of the roof, which could potentially save the school system money.

“It will determine what areas need a complete replacement and other areas that just need repairs and could reduce the cost of the project,” Wyatt said.

School Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson said the architect has recently done a similar reroofing project to the vocational center.

Wyatt said the reroofing project should not affect the any of the classes going on inside of the center, which includes its new welding class.

In other business, the board:

• entered into a contract with Azimuth Grant Strategies for grant research and drafting. Wilson said they would help locate grants to implement the Impact Hartselle program systemwide.

• elected board president Monty Vest and board member Venita Jones to be a delegate and alternate at the Alabama Association of School Boards conference Dec. 4-5 in Birmingham.

• allowed Wilson to negotiate a contract with the Hartselle-Morgan County Community Task Force to find a location for its afternoon tutoring program.

• hired Terri Robison as a child nutrition worker, Elizabeth Watwood as an instructional partner/coach at Hartselle Intermediate and Valerie Green to manage the HHS basketball concession stand for $15 per hour.

• approved Taylor Sivley as a volunteer choreographer for the HHS choral department and Micah Milligan to receive $500 from the HHS cross country boosters.

• added Tony Parker to the bus driver’s substitute list.

• announced the next board meeting will be Nov. 17 at Barkley Bridge.
