A ceremony unveiling a historical marker at the site of the old Morgan County training School at the corner of Bethel and Nix Streets will be conducted Sun., Nov. 2, at 2 p.m.

The school was located at 801 Bethel Street on the current property of Hartselle Head Start. The original building was built in 1924 and became one of the prominent schools in Alabama to educate African-American children. It was destroyed by fire in 1931 and rebuilt in 1934. Fire also destroyed that building in 1977 after integration caused it to close in 1970.

The school was established through a partnership between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald, CEO of Sears & Roebuck Company. It was built on five acres of land donated by local educator Catson N. McDaniel who served as the school’s first principal.

Birmingham Attorney Barbara Russell Luckett, a MCTS alumna, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Calvin Matthews, president of the Morgan County Training School Reunion will also speak.

Alabama A&M University will provide a selection of music performers. Dr. Reginald A. McDonald, director of the Tennessee State University band, will perform a solo instrumental.

Lee Y. Greene of Hartselle Historical Society submitted information to the State Tourism Department to have the school listed as a historical site. It was approved in December 2013. Jessica Williams, Emileigh Robb and Dakoyia Rainey did research on the school to help write a short story that is inscribed on the marker.

The school’s alumni association has strongly supported the project and is expected to be well represented at the dedication.

The public is invited to attend.
