Falkville Council meeting moved to Monday

The Falkville Town Council meeting will be Mon., Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. in the newly renovated municipal courtroom.

The meeting has been rescheduled from the usual Tuesday meeting time due to the Nov. 4 election.

The council discussed purchasing a truck for the public works and water and sewer departments during a work session Tues., Oct. 28. The current truck in use has been loaned to them by the Falkville Fire Department and is quickly becoming very expensive to maintain. They have been using the truck for three years, and one of its main duties is taking work release trustees back and forth from the Morgan County Jail in Decatur.

Mayor and utility superintendent Bob Ramey told the council that the current truck has already had several expensive parts replaced and has become unreliable.

“We have had to put a lot of money into it week after week, and it’s questionable how long it will last,” Ramey said. “We don’t need a brand new truck, but I think a different used one would be worth it. We can be on the look out for a gently used pick-up for a reasonable price. I’m thinking we can get what we need for around $8,000 to $10,000 if we keep a watch for one.”

The council also discussed the necessity of a full traffic survey before construction to determine whether the intersection at Buster Road, Douglas Road and Highway 55 will need a traffic light. The council is hoping a traffic light can be installed, and a preliminary traffic survey showed that a full traffic survey is recommended. A full traffic survey would cost $22,800, which is the total cost of $27, 300 minus the $4,500 the town already paid for the preliminary survey.

Ramey said the council doesn’t have this cost figured into the project budget. Councilman David Carroll suggested the council talk to County Commissioner Don Stisher about the necessity of the survey before making a decision. The council decided to table the discussion until further notice.

The Falkville Town Hall will host an Employee Appreciation Luncheon at noon Fri., Oct. 31.
