Outside of a few state offices and five proposed constitutional amendments, the ballot for the General Election on Tues, Nov. 4, offers slim pickings for Morgan County voters.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The only county office up for grabs is Morgan County License Commissioner. Voters will choose between Republican Sharon Maxwell and Democrat Sonya Patterson. Maxwell was picked as the Republican nominee in a Primary Election runoff. Patterson was nominated to represent her party without opposition. Both took leaves of absence from the license office to run for the position after long-time Democrat incumbent Sue Baker Roan opted to retire instead of seeking another term.

Maxwell said the focus of her campaign has been to talk with voters and get their ideas on what needs to be done to improve service at the license offices.

“The big concern is the lines,” she said. “I feel an extra person is needed to assist the clerks at peak times. That person could communicate with those waiting and make sure they have the paperwork they need. Upgrading the website, producing an instructional video and installing a telephone hotline would also help.

“Based on the feedback I’m getting from voters, I feel pretty confident at this point,” she said, “But I know that you can’t take anything for granted. I’ll continue to work hard through November 4.”

Patterson said she is working hard and getting positive feedback from voters. “I’m meeting and getting to talk to lots of wonderful people,” she said. “That makes me feel good but I’ve got to keep working hard to the end.”

She said she sees the need to use an express lane in the license offices to speed up customer service during peak time.

“I also want to make sure help is provided for the handicapped and technology is used to make our offices more efficient,” she added.

“The General Election will be conducted as it was for the June Primary,” said Morgan County Judge Greg Cain, “except that separate ballots will not be used for Republican and Democratic Party voting. Voters will have the option of voting a straight party ballot or switching from one party to the other.”

District offices up for grabs are State Representative District 8, with incumbent Republican Terri Collins facing Democratic nominee Rex Cheatham, and State Representative District 7, with Democrat John (Jody) Letson and Republican Ken Johnson as the candidates.

Incumbent Republican State Senator Arthur Orr and incumbent Republican State Representatives Ed Henry, Micky Hammon and Randall Shedd are on the ballot but have no opposition from the Democratic Party.

Also listed on the ballot without opposition are incumbent Morgan County Commssioners Jeff Clark, District 1, and Randy Vest, District 2, both Republicans: incumbent Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin, Republican; incumbent Morgan County Revenue Commissioner Amanda Scott, Republican; incumbent Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn, Republican; incumbent Morgan County Schools Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. Republican; incumbent Morgan County School Board members Mike Tarpley, District 3, and Tom Earwood, District 6, both Republicans; and Democratic and Morgan County School Board member Adam Glenn, Republican.

Heading the state office side of the ballot is incumbent Governor Robert Bentley, Republican, facing Democrat nominee Parker Griffith, Republican Kay Ivey and Democrat James C. Fields Jr. are seeking the Lt. Governor’s post; incumbent Republican Mo Brooks is opposed by Independent Mark Bray; incumbent Republican Luther Strange is opposed by Democrat Joe Hubbard for Attorney General; Democrat Lula Albertt-Starr.
