Community Calendar for Nov. 5

Nov. 6 

Hartselle Junior High School is having a Veterans Day program, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. in the Pettey Center. Veterans may arrive at 9:30 a.m. and park in the Pettey Center parking lot. Our Master of Ceremonies this is John Frank Parker.

 

Nov. 6-9

Hosted jointly by the Huntsville Kennel Club and the Decatur Alabama Kennel Club, the Cotton Cluster Dog Shows featuring 135 breeds are set for Nov. 6-9, at the Morgan County Celebration Arena, 67 Horse Center Rd., Decatur. Shows begin Thursday at 9 a.m., Friday at 8:30 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. Admission is free but parking is $5 per car daily.

 

Nov. 7

Priceville’s 4th Annual Bulldog Blackout Basketball kickoff is Fri., Nov. 7. Chili cook off and silent auction in cafeteria begins at 4:30 p.m. and bonfire at 5 p.m. Blackout begins at 7 p.m. in the big gym. For more info., call Tammy Haynes 256-466-5366

 

The American Legion will sponsor a dinner honoring military veterans in the community Fri., Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Morgan County Post 15 facility, 2607 Hwy. 31 South in Decatur. Proper dress for men includes a coat and tie and appropriate dress for ladies. The Morgan County Honor Guard will be in their uniforms and will have their photo made.  They do so much for the community supporting families who have lost a loved one and other Honor Guard duties. Nov. 8

The City of Hartselle would like to invite you to the fourth annual Veterans Day Parade, Sat., Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. This year’s theme is “Welcome Home Brother” the theme used by veterans returning home from Vietnam 50 years ago.

 

Nov. 10

The JROTC program at AP Brewer high school will be having a Veteran’s Day program on Mon. Nov. 10. All active and retired veterans and their families are encouraged to attend. We will have a Color Guard, Hat Laying ceremony for each branch, and salute to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and performances by the Brewer high Chorus and Band.

 

Nov. 11

The Falkville Public Library will host computer classes beginning Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. Classes will be each Tuesday for six weeks. The classes are free to all, but students must call or come by and sign up. Students must bring a flash drive to use in class.

Nov. 13

The annual meeting of the Morgan County Board of Education will be Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at the central office. A work session will be held at 5:30 p.m.

 

The Decatur Civic Chorus and the Athens Community Chorus are joining together for a special concert Thur., Nov. 13 celebrating the 60th anniversary of Rock and Roll with songs Elvis recorded such as “How Great Thou Art,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You,” “Blue Suede Shoes” and many others. The first showing of the concert will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Decatur at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.

 

Nov. 14

Marcus Luttrell, the former Navy SEAL, who served in Afghanistan and wrote about his experiences in the novel, later Hollywood movie, “Lone Survivor,” will bring his Patriot Tour to Tuscaloosa on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bama Theater. Tickets, ranging from $45 to $75, are available at patriottour.com. The event will also feature former SEAL Pete Scobbell, former SEAL David Goggins, former Army Airborne Ranger Capt. PES will have its annual Winterfest starting at 5 p.m. for food and 6 p.m. for games.

 

March 23-27

Hartselle and Morgan County schools will close for spring break March 23-27.

 

All Month

Water Aerobics classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:50 to 7:50 a.m. beginning June 2. The fee is $25 per month or $5 per visit.

 

Morgan County Humane Society, located at 86 Gum Springs Cut Off Road, is a no-kill animal shelter. It meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the shelter. For more info, call 256-773-7222.

A cancer support group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Pleasant Place building. Any person with any type of cancer is invited to attend. For more information, call 784-5694.

 

Hartselle’s New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Farm Service Agency office on Alabama 36 west of downtown Hartselle. It is open to all who are interested in quilt making, The guild is focused on beginning quilt makers to help them learn how to make a new block each month and new techniques used to make them. Weight Watchers classes meet on Mondays at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center with weigh-ins beginning 30 minutes prior to each meeting. Call 1-800-651-6000 for more information.

Baton classes meet Mondays at 5 p.m. The class is for age 6 and older. The fee is $40 per month.

 

Youth tumbling classes meet Mondays at 4 p.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. The class is for ages 3-12. The fee is $40 per month.

 

Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Glenn Wood and the Crosscut Band is featured. A free couples dance class is held on the first and third Saturdays from 6 to 7 p.m. You do not have to have a partner to participate. For more information, call 256-353-4362.

 

All mothers of active duty reserve or honorably discharged military service members are invited to attend monthly meetings of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. The Morgan County Chapter meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle.

 

The Hartselle Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays at 8 p.m.; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Friday meeting is a smoking meeting. Sparkman Civic Center offers birthday bash celebrations. Cost is $100. It includes party room at the civic center, themed invitations, themed decorations, plates, cups, napkins, eating utensils, party favors, games, activities and two party coordinators. All you need to supply is cake and refreshments. Space is limited. Be sure to register early. Party days are Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. AARP Chapter 1831 meets the first Tuesday of every month except July, at the Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, located 721 Pickens St. SW in Hartselle, at 10 a.m.

Senior Nutrition Center, also known as the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, sing-a-longs, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Groups also participate in evening supper bus trips. Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. The club works with Civitan International to support and work with people in our community with mental and physical disabilities and support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham. Civitan is the only civic club with a research center. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center.
