Maxwell will be sworn in as license commissioner Jan. 15
Sharon Maxwell pulled off a resounding victory in a race with Sonya Patterson for Morgan County License Commissioner in Tuesday’s General Election.
Maxwell, the Republican Party nominee, defeated her Democrat opponent 20,286 to 8,406 votes in the only county office up for election, after over 97 percent of the votes cast were counted.
“I’m overwhelmed and so thankful to everyone who supported and voted for me,” Maxwell said. “I’m ready to hit the ground running. I’m going back to work in the Hartselle license office Nov. 17 and will assume my duties as license commissioner after being sworn in Jan. 15, 2015.”
Unofficial results showed that 43.40 percent of the county’s 67,829 qualified voters cast ballots in the election. Of the 29,439 votes cast, the GOP received 10,977 straight party votes while the Democrats had 3,473 straight party votes.
In the race for State Representative, District 8, Republican incumbent Terri Collins defeated Democrat challenger Rex Cheatham 6,252 to 4,185 votes.
For U. S. Representative, District 5, Republican Mo Brooks defeated Democrat Mark Bray, 21,162 to 5,034 votes.
Republicans prevailed in all three statewide office offices up for election. Governor Robert Bentley won with 22,384 votes compared to 6,693 for his Democrat challenger Parker Griffith.
Kay Ivey defeated James C. Fields for Lieutenant Governor with over 73 percent of the vote and Luther Strange won over his Democrat challenger Joe Hubbard for Attorney General.
All five proposed Constitutional Amendments passed with only one being closely contested. Amendment No. 2 won with only 51.6 percent of the vote. It proposed using money from the Capital Improvement Trust Fund to plan, construct and maintain Alabama National Guard armories.
“I want to thank my supporters from the bottom of my heart for the confidence they have shown in me,” Maxwell stated. I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve all Morgan County residents. One of the first things I plan to do when I assume office is to visit a license office in another county of our size and look for ways we can be more efficient and better serve our customers.”
