Mayor Don Hall has recommended that Capt. Daryl Fox be named the new chief for the Hartselle Fire Department.

The Hartselle City Council will consider approving Fox as the new chief today at noon during a special called council meeting.

Fox and Capt. Philip Kelso were the only two candidates for the job.

Fox is an 18-year veteran with Hartselle Fire and Rescue. He has held the rank of captain for more than five years.

Fox is a native of Evergreen, graduated from Hillcrest (Evergreen) High School and holds an associate’s degree from Wallace State Community College. He also holds numerous certifications from the Alabama Fire College and is an instructor for fire classes, CPR and emergency vehicle operators courses.

Fox said if he is selected as the new fire chief, he wants to continue on the course that former chief Steve Shelton set.

“Chief Shelton put us on the right track with learning new techniques, training, certifications and education,” Fox said. “I’d like to continue that standard that he set and help us continue to improve as a department.”

Fox is married to Linda, who is a lieutenant in the police department. They have two children, Sean and Sarah.

Hall said Fox’s starting salary would be on Grade 27, Step 10, which is about $64,000. The salary grade has a range of $54,914 to $83,557. After six months probationary period, Hall would recommend a merit increase, bringing his salary above $68,000.

In other business, the council will consider:

• approving a $1,591.06 budget transfer within the police department to purchase two new computers.

• granting a special events permit to the Hartselle Kiwanis Club for the annual Christmas parade on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in downtown Hartselle.

• approving the 2015 Safe Workplace Guidelines, which would result in the city saving 10 percent on its worker’s compensation insurance.

• counting provisional ballots and canvassing the municipal option election on the wet-dry issue. No votes were leading by 231 on election night. Less than 50 provisional ballots will be considered.
