Shady Grove Baptist Church to host joint Thanksgiving service

The members of Shady Grove Baptist Church will be hosting a joint praise Thanksgiving service with Neel United Methodist Church Sun., Nov. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Neel United Methodist Church pastor Jason Green will be the speaker and a fellowship meal will follow the service. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Danville Middle School eighth graders took a Kuder test to help them determine skills and interests in their future earlier in the school year. On Oct. 30, these students attended the Career Expo at Ingalls Harbor pavilion for three hours.

Business, industry and governmental agencies were represented in 11 career clusters there. Some of the most popular career booths were audio-visual technology, communications, hospitality and tourism, health science, architecture and construction, agriculture and food, engineering and mathematics.

The students appreciated the opportunity to get help to plan their high school courses and training. The event is sponsored annually by the Workforce Development Committee of the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce.

The Neel United Methodist Women met Mon., Nov. 3, at the home of Suzanne Randolph. Susan Long presented the World Thank Offering program. This money goes to women and children’s missions worldwide. The unit planned their annual Ladies Retreat for Fri., Dec. 5, at the Red Rooster Inn at Smith Lake. Sixteen members enjoyed refreshments and fellowship.

Forrest Chapel United Methodist Church’s worship team meeting was Wed., Nov. 12, at 6:30 p.m. the Rev. Patsy Carlberg conducted the meeting. The Rev. Forrest Long led the Bible study at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The group study was on worship from the book of Psalms as their source for discussion.

The Carpenter’s Cabinet Awards Banquet was held Tues., Nov. 11. The banquet was hosted by Fairview: The Grace Place in the fellowship hall and it was catered by Cliff Hanger Barbecue. Barbara Summerford of Round Top community won the “Volunteer of the Year” award and the “Servant’s Heart “ award. Arthur Ray Summerford received a volunteer certificate. Chris Warnick, director of the South Morgan Food Pantry and Family Resource facility, was very pleased with all the volunteer work, the board’s continued dedication and public support.

The South Morgan area Thanksgiving service will be held at Pine Street Baptist Church in Falkville Sun., Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. The Piney Grove, New Life, Round Top, Massey and Falkville churches are part of this association. There will be special music, children’s minutes, donations for traveler’s funds, the Thanksgiving sermon and other concerns.

On Oct. 19, Shady Grove Baptist Church members had a special service to celebrate 125 years of ministry. They celebrated the past, present and future of Shady Grove Church, with worship, heartfelt thanks and a great time of fellowship.

Pastor Tom Campbell was presented with a gift card for his 23 years of service. Nancy Beasley of the Alabama Historical Commission presented a certificate.

Former pastor Robert McIlwain shared some memories and thoughts. The special music was provided by Jonathan & Jackson Schuster.

Mary Terry spoke and gave certificates to the oldest members, Ruby Self and Delbert Vest, both 89, and Junior Taylor, who has been there the longest. His great grandmother was a charter member. Mark Wakefield, who was saved as a youth here, presented a certificate from the state mission board and preached a sermon.

Following the service, a delicious dinner was served with many dishes prepared from recipes in the new church cookbook, which is still available to anyone who wishes to buy one for $10 each. The Fellowship Quartet provided some wonderful gospel music from 1:30 – 3 p.m. Everyone enjoyed it so much that plans are being made to have a homecoming each year at the same time.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Brandon and Sara Turrentine on their second anniversary Sun., Nov. 23.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Rhonda James on Sun., Nov. 23.

Get well wishes go out this week to Beverly Murphy who had surgery at UAB Hospital on Thur., Nov. 13. Many know Beverly and Dan Murphy from classic car shows.

Dan is from Falkville and Beverly is originally from Lawrence Cove. Her address is 3113 Hwy 31 South, Hartselle AL. 35640. Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

Friendship Baptist Church, off Hwy. 41 near Danville will have their combined Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meal after the morning worship service on Dec. 7. Following lunch, their pastor, Don Gentry, will conduct an In Gathering Offering for those who have needs at this time. Brother Gentry will also bless the 100 First Samaritan shoe boxes packed for needy third-world children.

At the 11 a.m. worship service on Nov. 9, Makayla Holladay spoke to the members and visitors at Friendship about her mission trip to Africa during the summer. Makayla’s grandparents are James E. and Carol Holladay of Johnson’s Chapel Road in Massey.

McKendree United Methodist Church’s Bridge Center on new Cut Road was filled with music and inspiration on Sun., Nov. 9, at 2:30 p.m.

Their song service is called Thrive and will be the second Sunday of each month.

Noah Battles, youth director at Gum Springs Baptist Church was the leader of the Praise Band.

McKendree participants were Tom Summerford, Jennifer Hogan and Tammy Vest. Brother Mike Vest, pastor, was the speaker. He also led the closing prayer and blessed the food.

Refreshments were served in the fellowship hall to the 50 who attended from the community and other areas.
