Community Calendar for Dec. 3

Dec. 4

The Brewer High School Band’s annual Christmas concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4. The concert will be held in the BHS Gymnasium.

 

The William Bradford Huie Public Library is having three story times in December. Dates are Dec. 4, 11 and 18 at 4 p.m.  We will be reading a Christmas book and making ornaments.

 

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will host a Pinterest Party Thur., Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. They will be feeding the addiction of Pin-a-holics with a Christmas project. The fee is $15 and includes all supplies. Attendees must pay and register at Sparkman Civic Center no later than Dec. 2.

 

Central Business District Design Review Board will meet Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.

 

Dec. 5

The Town of Falkville will host an open house for its new addition the municipal building Fri., Dec. 5.

 

A Christmas Arts and Crafts show will be at the Cullman Civic Center, Fri., Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sat., Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 256-355-1585.

 

Dec. 6

The Priceville Christmas Parade will be Sat., Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. The rain date will be Dec. 13.

 

Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 10774 is hosting a Christmas Bazaar at Sparkman Civic Center Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds will go to Eagle Landings, a transitional housing community for homeless veterans.

 

The Falkville High School softball team will host a pancake breakfast Dec. 6 from 6 to 10:30 a.m. at Momma’s Roadhouse Grill, 59 Douglas Road in Falkville. Tickets are available for $6 from any softball player. All proceeds go to the Lady Blue Devils softball program.

 

The HHS Competition Cheerleaders are hosting Breakfast with Santa Dec. 6 from 8:30-11 a.m. at the HHS cafeteria. All tickets are $5 and include a pancake breakfast and crafts for children. Visitors are invited to bring their own camera to take pictures of their little ones on Santa’s knee. The Somerville Christmas Parade will be Sat., Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. A pancake breakfast will be held from 7-11 a.m. Call or email Town Hall to sign up a group, float, horse or tractor at 256-778-8282 or townofsomerville@aol.com.

 

Dec. 7

Falkville Christmas in the Park will be Sun., Dec. 7, starting at 4 p.m. at Jack McCaig Park. The Falkville band will perform and the annual Christmas tree lighting will take place.

 

Dec. 10

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will be selling 2015 season passes to the Hartselle Aquatic Center at a discount of 30 percent Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. Individual passes are $70 and each additional pass for someone in the same household is $35. This sale will be held again March 10.

 

Dec. 11

The Hartselle Christmas Parade is Thurs., Dec. 11, starting at 7 p.m. The parade theme is “Miracle on Main Street.” Entry forms are available from the Hartselle Kiwanis Club on its website at hartsellekiwanisclub.org.

 

The Morgan County Board of Education work session will be Dec. 11, at 5 p.m. and the business meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the MCBOE office at 1325 Point Mallard Parkway, SE, Decatur. All items for consideration should be submitted to the Superintendent for review by noon on Dec. 5.

 

Dec. 12

Santa will be at Sparkman Civic Center Fri., Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. for Supper with Santa. He will share a story with children as supper is being served. The menu includes chicken fingers and French fries. After supper, each child will have a chance to share his/her wish list with Santa and have their photo made with him. The fee, which includes a photograph, is $10 per child. Please pay at Sparkman Civic Center by Dec. 9. There is only room for 50 children.

 

Stop by Sparkman Civic Center Dec. 12 to register a child to receive a Santa Gram. Santa himself will be visiting children in the Hartselle area two weeks prior to Christmas to see if they are being naughty or nice and bring them a memento of the visit. Space is limited, and the fee is $25 for one child in the household and $5 for each additional child.

 

Dec. 13

Kid’s Night Out will be held Dec. 13 from 6-10 p.m. for parents to finish up Christmas shopping. There will be a Christmas movie, games, crafts and much more for grades kindergarten through fourth grade. Register and pay the $10 fee per child by Dec. 8. Space is limited.

 

Dec. 15

All letters to Santa Claus must be received by Parks and Recreation by Dec. 15. Send a letter to Santa through the Parks and Recreation Dept., and Santa will send personal replies in about a week. Please send all letters and an enclosed stamp for the return letter to Santa c/o Hartselle Parks and Recreation, P.O. Box 987 Hartselle, AL 35640. Teachers should have their letters to Sparkman Civic Center no later than Dec. 8 if it is a class project.

Dec. 12

American Legion Post 52 Kids Day will be Fri., Dec 12 at the Hartselle Civic Center. Participants will be greeted by Santa and receive an age-appropriate wrapped gift and a bag of fruit and candy.

 

Dec. 16

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 11 meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at 108 Finley Drive, Decatur. For local veteran assistance, call 610-442-3680.

 

Dec. 21

Hartselle Parks and Recreation is hosting a Candy Cane Hunt Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. at Pavillion 4 at Sparkman Park. Bring a basket and a sack of candy canes. Children will hunt by age groups (ages 3 and under, 4-5, 6 and older). Prizes will be given to those who find the specially marked candy canes. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served. The event is free, but participants are asked to register by Dec. 18.

 

Dec. 22-Jan. 5

Hartselle City and Morgan County schools will close for the Christmas holidays.

 

Jan. 2

Fifth and sixth graders are invited to join a New Year’s Party at Sparkman Civic Center Jan. 2 from 7-9 p.m. There will be music, dancing, party favors and snacks to celebrate the new year. Please register and pay the $10 fee per child at Sparkman Civic Center no later than Dec. 30.

 

Jan. 30

Priceville Elementary School will have its Board Member Appreciation breakfast Jan. 30 from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m.

 

Feb. 27

PES will have its annual Winterfest starting at 5 p.m. for food and 6 p.m. for games.

 

March 23-27

Hartselle and Morgan County schools will close for spring break March 23-27.

 

All month

Water Aerobics classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:50 to 7:50 a.m. beginning June 2. The fee is $25 per month or $5 per visit.

 

Morgan County Humane Society, located at 86 Gum Springs Cut Off Road, is a no-kill animal shelter. It meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the shelter. For more information, call 256-773-7222.

 

Volunteer entertainment is needed at Columbia Cottage in Hartselle. Gospel or country singers, instrumentalists, comedians, speakers, home schoolers, children or youth groups are welcome. Contact Penny Vest at 751-4809 or 502-1491.

 

A cancer support group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Pleasant Place building. Any person with any type of cancer is invited to attend. For more information, call 784-5694.

 

Hartselle’s New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Farm Service Agency office on Alabama 36 west of downtown Hartselle. It is open to all who are interested in quilt making, The guild is focused on beginning quilt makers to help them learn how to make a new block each month and new techniques used to make them. Weight Watchers classes meet on Mondays at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center with weigh-ins beginning 30 minutes prior to each meeting. Call 1-800-651-6000 for more information.

Baton classes meet Mondays at 5 p.m. The class is for age 6 and older. The fee is $40 per month.

 

Youth tumbling classes meet Mondays at 4 p.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. The class is for ages 3-12. The fee is $40 per month.

 

Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Glenn Wood and the Crosscut Band is featured. A free couples dance class is held on the first and third Saturdays from 6 to 7 p.m. You do not have to have a partner to participate. For more information, call 256-353-4362.

 

All mothers of active duty reserve or honorably discharged military service members are invited to attend monthly meetings of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. The Morgan County Chapter meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle.

 

The Hartselle Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays at 8 p.m.; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Friday meeting is a smoking meeting. Sparkman Civic Center offers birthday bash celebrations. Cost is $100. It includes party room at Sparkman Civic Center, themed invitations, themed decorations, plates, cups, napkins, eating utensils, party favors, games, activities and two party coordinators. All you need to supply is cake and refreshments. Space is limited, so register early. Party days are Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. AARP Chapter 1831 meets the first Tuesday of every month except July, at the Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, located 721 Pickens St. SW in Hartselle, at 10 a.m.

Senior Nutrition Center, also known as the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, sing-a-longs, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Groups also participate in evening supper bus trips. Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. The club works with Civitan International to support and work with people in our community with mental and physical disabilities and support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham. Civitan is the only civic club with a research center. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center.
