Falkville Lions set holiday project

Needy families in South Morgan County will receive food and gifts at the annual Falkville Lions Club Christmas project Sat., Dec. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Falkville Fire Department.

“We have 40 families and 90 children signed up,” Lions Club president and project coordinator Terry Nappier said November 25. “Those numbers will increase to around 50 families and 100 children between now and Dec. 20.”

Each family will receive a box of fruit, nonperishable canned food, a canned ham and a Bible. Each child will receive an age-appropriate wrapped gift.

Falkville High School Student Council members will help wrap gifts and FFA members will help distribute food boxes and gifts.

Santa Claus will greet children and refreshments will be served.

Nappier said canned food will come from a food drive conducted by Channel 48 and the Morgan County Volunteer Center. The project is also supported by two club fundraisers, a golf tournament at Quail Creek Golf Course and a turkey and ham shoot. Cash contributions are also received from local businesses and community organizations and interested individuals.

Nappier said many of the recipients show their appreciation by giving helpers hugs and voicing a “thank you.’”

“We get help from the counselors at the high school and elementary school to identify area families in need,” Nappier pointed out. “Most would have little or nothing for Christmas without what we are able to provide.”
