The Hartselle Tigers hosted their second annual varsity tournament, the Hartselle Invitational, Saturday with 16 teams competing.

Hartselle placed fourth overall behind first place Southside/ Gadsden, second place Athens and third place Pinson Valley.

Logan Smith finished first place in the 140 pound weight class, making him 12-3 on the season. David Dunford, Ashton Quattlebaum and John Holt took second place in the 134 pound, 222 pound and heavyweight classes, respectively. Michael Prince earned a third place medal in the 147 pound weight class. Dunford is now 22-6, Holt is 24-4, Prince is 21-8 and Quattlebaum is 22-1.

Hartselle’s head coach Matt Watson said the tournament ran very smoothly.

“We had a year behind us hosting the tournament,” Watson said, “and everything went well for our second year. This is definitely one of the best run tournaments around, and that credit should be given to the community, parents, National Honor Society and volunteers that gave up there time to help out.”

Watson said he saw some improvements that needed to be made on the mat.

“We need to be able to get back on our feet from the bottom,” Watson said. “We have to find a way back up to wrestle. That’s something we will have to work on more.”

Overall, Watson said he was very pleased with Hartselle’s performance in the tournament.

“This tournament had a higher level of competition than last year,” Watson said. “I was happy with fourth out of those 16 competitive teams. We had four guys in the finals, which was pretty good. Logan Smith pinned every guy he wrestled, and Ashton Quattlebaum came into Saturday undefeated and finished well. John Holt fought hard in his final match with a guy from Pinson Valley he had already lost to.”

Watson hopes to continue to grow the tournament and possibly add a JV tournament on the same day in the future.
