A look back at Health (1)

At this time of year people are more likely to be sick than in warmer seasons when they can be outside and are not so likely to be exposed to germs spread by their family and friends.

Pharmacies are now able to give flu shots and immunizations from other ailments (such as shingles when a physician has prescribed this). Many years ago so-called “patent medicines” were advertised widely, if mostly erroneously, as remedies for common “ailments.”

Here is an initial list of some of the medicines the advertisements for which were regularly seen by both our nineteenth and early twentieth century ancestors and potential customers more recently.

In order to add to the credibility of the medicines they were frequently proceeded by a real or fictitious doctor’s name as were those listed this week.
