Thirty-seven scouts from Hartselle Cub Scout Pack 92 showed off their science and engineering prowess during the 2015 Pinewood Derby Saturday at Hartselle First United Methodist Church.

Colton Tucker, who won the Grand Prix Champion Trophy, named his car Solar Eclipse. He had no idea it would take home the top prize.

“We had a problem last night with one of the wheels,” Tucker said. “It was going left and it was starting to wobble, but we were able to get it fixed. I was surprised that I won.”

David McKelvy’s car Mega Rayquaza, named after the most powerful Pokemon, gave Tucker a run for his money for the top spot. His car beat Tucker’s in several heats, but Tucker’s finished with the fastest overall average speed, which topped 225 mph.

“He’s (Mega Rayquaza) so fast that it could destroy a meteor six miles wide,” McKelvy said. “That’s what I wanted to name my car because he’s so fast.”

While some were going after speed, Logan Faulk’s Mystery Machine, based on the van used in Scooby Doo cartoons, was trying to win the Turtle Race, the winner of which receives the largest trophy of the day. However, the car came up just short of the finish line.

That allow J.R. Richardson to win the Turtle Race.

Cubmaster Mark Haskins said this was one of the most successful events that they’ve put on. In fact, this was the first time they were able to use their new racetrack, which was purchased from businesses who sponsored Pinewood Derby cars in its corporate division.

“The track actually came on Thursday,” Haskins said. “We assembled it at a warehouse in Decatur for the first time, took it apart and then put it back together for the derby today. We were able to purchase this track with the donations from last year’s corporate sponsors.”

The 50-foot track included a digital timing system that recorded each car’s speed and time. A parent also brought a camera system to allow everyone to see the action whether they were by the track or not.

Since the Cub Scout pack has obtained the track, it has earned the right to host the Arrowhead District Pinewood Derby.

“This year, Morgan County got to host the race, and we were selected to host the race,” Haskins said. “It’s open to all Cub Scout packs in the Arrowhead District.”
