Ellow, Vehrs nominated to service academies

Matthew Ellow and Jacob Verhs were among the 33 Alabama students that U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., nominated to the United States Service Academies.

Vehrs, the son of Jason and Donna Vehrs of Decatur, is a student at Priceville High School and was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Ellow, son of Charles and Kathleen Bestor of Lacey’s Spring, is a student at A.P. Brewer High School and was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy.

“I am proud to announce that these outstanding students have been selected as my nominees to the United States service academies,” Shelby of all 33 candidates.  “These young men and women are among the best and the brightest in Alabama as evidenced by their exemplary performance both inside and outside the classroom. It is my honor to recommend them, and I wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.”

In order to be considered for nomination, applicants must be residents of Alabama and complete the required ACT or SAT exams. They must also provide letters of recommendation, a school transcript, a completed medical examination, and a completed application form found on Shelby’s website.

The academy to which each was nominated will make the final admission decision.
