SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: Patriot soccer needs to stay injury-free
The Brewer High School boys soccer team is still recovering from losing all 11 starters a few years back, but head coach Michael Drinkard says they have a lot of potential.
They have seven seniors on this year’s team after losing five to graduation.
“We are pretty young this year, but we have some of the younger ones stepping up,” Drinkard said. “Our seniors have shown some leadership already, and we have a lot of club players who have extra reps and coaching in the off-season.”
Drinkard also has extra help on the sidelines this year with a JV coach and a school representative. This allows them to schedule separate extra JV games for more experience.
The restructure has changed their area from six teams to only three with the Patriots facing Cullman and Lee-Huntsville as area opponents.
Last year’s leading scorer was a ninth grader, who will be returning this season.
The Patriots were plagued by several key injuries late last year, but they still saw steady improvement throughout the season, according to Drinkard.
“They definitely have a chance if they play to the best of their ability,” Drinkard said. “They are good enough to make and win at the playoffs. Their biggest obstacle will be staying injury-free.”
