Tigers launch baseball season with 1-2 record

The Hartselle Tigers launched their 2015 baseball season on the road Saturday, compiling a 1-2 record during their first games of the Birmingham-Huntsville Tournament.

The Tigers defeated Hazel Green 8-7 on the strength of a two-run double by Tate Mathis in the eighth inning. They lost to Vestavia 4-3 and Hoover 8-4.

The Tigers jumped ahead of Hazel Green with two runs in the first inning but needed two runs in the eighth to get the win after their opponent tied the game in the seventh.

Collin Blackwood led the Tigers at the plate with a double, two singles, three RBIs and a run. He also had a stolen base.

Other Tiger hitters were Hayden Bradford and Jake Chaney with two singles each, Will Foote with a double and Brady Netherton with an RBI single and a sacrifice RBI.

Taylor Easterling earned the win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter in two innings of work.

Netherton pitched four innings, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out five and walking three batters.

Jake Rice pitched two innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one batter. Cooper Wright pitched one inning with a strikeout and didn’t allow a hit.

The Tigers matched Vestavia in hits with six apiece but came up one short in the seventh inning. They trailed 0-2 after the first inning and scored all three of their runs in the seventh.

Collins Hanners accounted for two of Hartselle’s runs with a single. Foote, Bradford, Blackwood, Netherton and Austin Parker each singled.

Blake Lowe was the losing pitcher. He pitched two and one-third innings, allowing two runs on one hit while striking out two and walking three batters.

The Tigers managed only five hits in their loss to Hoover. They scored three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh inning.

For Hartselle, Foote had an RBI double, Easterling had a double, Bradford had a pair of singles and an RBI and Cooper Wright had an RBI single.

Mason Towers was the losing pitcher. He pitched four innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out one and walking one batter. Nic James also pitched an inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter.
