Priceville OKs lease for Boys and Girls Club
Priceville area boys and girls between the age of 5 and 19 will have a place to go after school to do their homework, participate in games and recreational activities and hang out with their friends in the near future.
Priceville Town Council took action to make that possible by approving an agreement and lease of the old Linda Duran Public Library for a Boys and Girls Club at its regular meeting Mon., Feb. 23.
Representing the North Central Alabama Boys and Girls Clubs at the meeting were David Varner and Joe Lubisco.
“We have some painting and minor repairs to do inside the main building and a detached garage,” said Varner, “and we’ll be working on that right away with the help of volunteers. Our plan is to open enrollment to 50 kids on a first come, first served basis at the beginning. Later, we hope to have space so that we could accommodate up to 150 kids.”
“The buildings should be ready to open in a few weeks,” Varner added.
Mayor Melvin Duran supported the idea.
“Priceville is growing, and it’s time for us to do this for our kids,” said Duran. “It’s a positive step for our community, and I’m excited about the impact it can have.”
Councilman Tommy Perry, chairman of the town’s Community Relations Committee, said the old library property is being leased for $1. The town will be responsible for utilities, grounds upkeep and any major repairs. The Boys and Girls Club will provide general maintenance of the building and take care of minor repairs.
Varner said volunteers would be needed to operate the facility. Anyone interested in serving is invited to contact him at 256-508-1023 or Lubisco at 256-306-9996
