Supplies needed for Nicaraguan mission
An HHS graduate will soon be embarking on a long-anticipated trip to a small Nicaraguan community on March 14.
Alec Durand, a current chemical and biological engineering student at the University of Alabama, will be traveling with a volunteer program to provide basic healthcare to the people of the community.
The team is asking for donations of necessary supplies that will aid in the daily care of residents and interactions on the trip. The most needed items are pain relievers (ibuprofen and acetaminophen- no aspirin), children’s multi-vitamins, antacids/ acid reducers and anti-fungal creams. The team would also like to take crayons drawing books, notebooks, pencils, toothbrushes and toothpaste to hand out to children in the clinic.
Donations can be dropped off at Mike’s Brake and Alignment in Hartselle by March 13.
“What we take for granted, these people have limited or no access to,” Durand said. “I feel the supplies we offer will make a big difference in the quality of life for the people of this community.”
Following extensive training, Durand and other volunteers will work in the local clinic to administer essential care to residents on a daily basis. Durand will be sharing the experience with Kaitlyn Curry, a fellow engineering student and Alpha Epsilon Delta Chapter at the Capstone.
“I have always felt supported by my community,” Durand said. “That is why I decided to reach out and ask for support in this very important mission. I want the people of Nicaragua to know that there are people out there who care even if they have never met them. I want them to experience that at least once.”
