Shady Grove Baptist Church members have set a goal to collect items to fill 750 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

A special offering of $1,200 was given in memory of Charles Long on Feb. 15 for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

The following items are needed for the shoeboxes: 750 washcloths, bars of soap, candy, notebooks, crayons, pencils, small toys and stuffed animals, socks, hats and flip flops. All help will be greatly appreciated in memory of Charles Long.

McKendree United Methodist Church hosted the second Sunday Thrive service at their Bridge Ministry Center on New Cut Road in Massey on March 8. Praise and worship began at 2 p.m. led by Noah Battles.

The praise team was Tom Summerford, Tammy Vest and Selena Lindsey. Noah played guitar and keyboard. Brother Mike Vest welcomed everyone.

His message honored the work of St. Patrick in bringing Christianity to Ireland. He used the shamrock to show the Trinity: God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Everyone received a shamrock and a necklace with a green symbol. The necklaces were anointed and prayed for by visitors to the service.

The congregation wore green for the St. Patrick’s themed event. Decorations and food followed the green and Irish motif.

A green velvet cake made by Tina Summerford was a favorite. Brother Mike dismissed the service and blessed the food.

Neel United Methodist women met at Michelle Randolph’s home Wed., March 4, at 7 p.m. Bonee Mitchell presided in the absence of the president.

Page Blackwood gave the devotional. Audrey Crowe gave the program on “The poor are not the enemy.” Sixteen members enjoyed the refreshments served by the hostess.

The April meeting will be Wed., April 1, with a Passover and Easter theme.

Hank Summerford conducted a youth meeting with McKendree and Forrest Chapel United Methodist group combined. They had Bible study and planned a program for Forrest Chapel.

Anita Reid of the Corinth West community attended a reunion lunch for the LGR Company, formerly on north Sparkman Street, on Wed., March 11, at Las Vias Mexican Grill in Hartselle. Scotty Maples and Jerry Weeks were the owners and managers of the business until it closed.

Scotty was an original partner of the company with Calvin Spurlin. They did taxes for towns and cities, hence the name Local Government Revenue. Former employees and managers enjoyed it and look forward to future meetings.

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church remember in loving memory this week, Ottie Lou Self, from March 6, 1930 to November 2006; Odis “Junior” Lacy, from March 11, 1927, to Aug. 27, 2006; and Fay Edwards from March 22, 1931, to June 25, 2007.

The No Fences Cowboy Church on County Road 55 West in Falkville is a Christ-centered, non-denominational church. It is simple with good music, preaching of the word, great fellowship and friends you haven’t met yet. Come as you are to Sunday service 8:30 or 10:30 a.m., Sunday and Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

On Wed., March 11, former patrons of the Weekdays Deli in downtown Hartselle met for lunch and fellowship at the Holy Smoke BBQ in Tanner Heights at noon. Those attending shared news and photos of families, friends and their current activities.

Traci Slate was owner/manager of the deli. Junior and Jerri Hyatt, owners and chefs at Holy Smoke are also former deli patrons.

Birthday honorees for the group in March are Wendi Westmoreland on March 11 and Bobbie Nix on March 13. The next meeting will be Wed., April 8, at noon at Holy Smoke BBQ on U.S. 31 south in Hartselle.

Human trafficking is a subject of concern for the United Methodist Women’s units in the United States and worldwide.

On Thur., March 12, Salem Church’s United Methodist women met at 10 a.m. Guest speaker, Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin talked to members and visitors about the increase in and the tragedies of human trafficking in the world today. After the program, those attending enjoyed refreshments in the fellowship hall.

Massey area girls who attended their Falkville High Prom on Fri., March 13 were Callie Garner, Emily Gray, Makenzie Smith, Christina Fortenberry and Skye Engle. This year the dance theme was a masquerade ball and the Quail Creek facility near Falkville was beautifully decorated.

Parents of the FHS seniors attended to see the lead outs honoring senior class members and their dates. Refreshment tables were laden with delicious food and decorated with masks, flowers, balloons and candles.

The junior class, the teachers and prom committee were complimented for the successful and memorable event. The seniors had breakfast or sunrise parties after the prom.

The Falkville High School Class of 1957 will meet on Tues., March 31, at noon. They chose Mister Henry’s restaurant in Hartselle for their quarterly lunch and fellowship meetings.

Corinth West Methodist Church will have Spring Revival from Mon., March 30, to Wed., April 1, at 7 p.m. Their evangelist will be Brother Edward King, pastor at Pine Grove Holy Church of Christ, in Lawrence County.

Corinth West Methodist and Mt. Vernon Methodist Churches will meet on Easter Sunday at 6 a.m. at Piney Grove Methodist Church for sunrise service. The host church will serve breakfast following Brother Wayne Jetton’s message. The Piney Grove pastor is Brother Dwight NeSmith and music director is Leon Hightower.
