Morgan County Schools will be in session April 3. This day is a make-up weather day that will be used to make up the day lost on Feb. 20.

April 4

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Rodeo Parade Kickoff will be at the Morgan County Sheriff’s Posse Grounds, located at 1801 Vest Road in Hartselle, April 4 at noon. Contestants may ride a horse, but it is not mandatory. No horses will be provided.

The American Legion Post 15 in Decatur will be hosting a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill and ceremonies competition April 4 at 9 a.m. It is located at 2607 Highway 31 South in Decatur. The competition is free and open to the public.

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will have its annual dog bone hunt April 4 at 10 a.m. in Sparkman Park. There will also be a contest for best Easter costume, largest dog, smallest dog and the dog that found the most bones.There is no fee or registration; however, officials ask that you have proof of dog vaccinations and keep your dog on a leash. No more than one dog per person.

April 6

The Hartselle Board of Zoning Adjustment will meet April 6 at 5 p.m. in the Hartselle City Hall Auditorium. Items on the agenda include Home Occupation Variance at 1201 Sparkman St. SW and Frontage Variance (Flag Lot) on Brookwood Drive SW.

April 7

Sparkman School will be having a Swamp John’s fundraiser Tues., April 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria for $10. See any Sparkman staff member before March 31, or call the school office at 256-773-6458 to order your advance tickets. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a new air conditioner for the gym. Sparkman School is located at 72 Plainview St. in Hartselle.

The Hartselle Planning Commission will meet April 7 at 8 a.m. at the Hartselle City Hall auditorium. Items on the agenda include Layout Plat on Peach Tree Road, Certificate to Subdiv/Consol. on Norris Mill Road, Certificate to Subdiv/Consol. on Brookwood Drive SW and Site Plan on Pattillo Street SW.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Special Needs Rodeo will be at Morgan County Celebration Arena April 9 at 8 a.m.

April 11

Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak is having a YEA Decatur event featuring student musicians of Decatur Youth Orchestra Sat., April 11, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Decatur.

April 16

Hartselle City Schools’ early release for April 16 has been cancelled. It will be a normal school day.

The Hartselle Board of Education will have its regular meeting April 20 at 6 p.m. at Hartselle Intermediate School.

April 21

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will have a Pinterest party to paint door hangers, April 21 at 6 p.m. The theme will be a chalkboard rooster hanger and a frog. Participants must register for this class by April 17, for a fee a $15 per project. Children are welcome to attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult that is also taking the class.

May 1

The annual Somerville Celebration Festival will be Fri., May 1. There will be food, a 5K and one-mile fun run, antique car show and fireworks. Live music will be provided by Wayne Abbott as Willie Nelson, Garrett & Briana Dean and the Fellowship Quartet. Vendors set up by 3 p.m., the music and 5K start at 5 p.m. and the fireworks start at 9 p.m. Parking is free and there is no entry fee. All proceeds will benefit the renovation of the historic Somerville Courthouse. Vendor space is available and race sign-ups are ongoing. For more information, call Town Hall at 256-778-8282.

Water Aerobics classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:50 to 7:50 a.m. beginning June 2. The fee is $25 per month or $5 per visit.

Hartselle’s New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Farm Service Agency office on Alabama 36 west of downtown Hartselle. It is open to all who are interested in quilt making, The guild is focused on beginning quilt makers to help them learn how to make a new block each month and new techniques used to make them. Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Glenn Wood and the Crosscut Band is featured. Senior Nutrition Center, also known as the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, sing-a-longs, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Groups also participate in evening supper bus trips. Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. The club works with Civitan International to support and work with people in our community with mental and physical disabilities and support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham. Civitan is the only civic club with a research center. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center.
