April 16

Hartselle City Schools’ early release for April 16 has been cancelled. It will be a normal school day.

 

Cullman Regional Medical Center’s Celia M. Hartselle City Schools will be in session April 17. This day is a make-up weather day.

 

Calhoun Community College’s 25th annual Gospel Fest will be Fri., April 17 in the Grand Foyer of Calhoun’s campus at 6 p.m. The concert is free and refreshments will be served. It will feature the fourth annual Calhoun Gospel Workshop Choir and the Calhoun Chorale.

 

April 18

The Hartselle Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association will host a handgun safety class Sat., April 18 at 8 a.m. in the Sherrill Street facility. Information and a link to online registration can be found at hcpaaa.org.

 

April 18-25

The Hartselle Beautification Association will host the Take Pride Hartselle 2015 Campaign April 18-25 as part of the Great American Clean-Up event this year. A kickoff event will be April 18 from 9-11 a.m. at Sparkman Park with Sen. Arthur Orr. Participants will be able to register for prizes, including a $500 cash prize. The first 100 to register will receive a special prize. Participants do not have to live within the Hartselle city limits. The prize drawing will be April 27 on 105.7 WQAH Hartselle Radio. April 19

The April meeting of the Decatur Music Club will be April 19 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, located at 3310 Danville Road SW in Decatur. A spring clothing give-away will be Sun., April 19, from 12 to 5 p.m. and Mon., April 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at Talucah Volunteer Fire Department. All types of clothing will be free. Pleasant Acres SDA Church Community Services Department will sponsor the give-away.

 

April 20

The Hartselle Board of Education will have its regular meeting April 20 at 6 p.m. at Hartselle Intermediate School.

 

Hartselle Board of Zoning and Adjustment meeting has been rescheduled for April 20 at 5 p.m.

 

The Bosom Buddies Support Group offers support to individuals affected by breast cancer. Their next meeting will be Mon., April 20 from 6-8 p.m. in Cullman Regional Medical Center’s Ave Maria Room in Professional Office Building 2. For more information, call 256-737-2600.

 

April 21

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will have a Pinterest party to paint door hangers, April 21 at 6 p.m. The theme will be a chalkboard rooster hanger and a frog. Participants must register by April 17 and pay a fee a $15 per project at Sparkman Civic Center. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult taking the class.

Priceville Elementary School is hosting a Kids Walk for Diabetes Tues., April 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the football field track. They will hopefully raise $1,200 and awareness to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

 

April 23

The Priceville Public Safety Department will have a gun safety program April 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bill Dinsmore Community Center located on Alabama 67. Topics covered in the class include law/eminent danger by Sheriff Ana Franklin, 911 response by Cpl. Herman Davis and choice of weapons and ammunition review by Councilman Jerry Welch. Class participants will also receive assistance in concealed weapons permit applications, visually inspect weapons for unsafe conditions, collect old ammunition for disposal and issue free gun safety locks. The Adult Diabetes Support Group will meet April 23 from 6-8 p.m. in Cullman Regional Medical Center’s Ave Maria Room in Professional Office Building 2. April 25

East Highland Baptist Church is hosting its 16th annual East Highland Baptist Youth Missions Trip Golf Tournament April 25 at 8 a.m. at Chesley Oaks Course in Cullman. Mulligans and power drives are available. Proceeds go toward the youth missions trip June 28. Entry fees are $55 per player and $270 per team, including game, cart, lunch and prizes. May 1

The annual Somerville Celebration Festival will be Fri., May 1. There will be food, a 5k and one-mile fun run, antique car show and fireworks. Live music will be provided by Wayne Abbott as Willie Nelson, Garrett and Briana Dean and the Fellowship Quartet. Vendors set up by 3 p.m., the music and 5k start at 5 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9 p.m. Parking is free and there is no entry fee. All proceeds will benefit the renovation of the historic Somerville Courthouse. Vendor space is available and race sign-ups are ongoing. For more information, call Town Hall at 256-778-8282.

 

May 2-3

The Morgan County Master Gardeners Association will host a plant sale Sat., May 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sun., May 3 from 1-4 p.m. at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, behind the Home Depot in Decatur. This annual sale will feature unusual plants, houseplants, succulents, annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, wildflowers and mixed containers. There will also be hanging baskets and containers ready for gift-giving. Vendors will have specialty plants and items for the home and yard.

 

May 9

Hartselle Junior High School’s IMPACT program will host the Jennifer Burks Memorial Run 5k and one-mile fun run Sat., May 9. Registration is going on now, and entry fees are $20 and $10 for the 5k and one-mile fun run, respectively. The race will begin at HJHS. Late registration and packet pickup will be $5 more Fri., May 8, at the Pettey Center from 4-7 p.m. and Sat., May 9 from 6:45-7:30 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the IMPACT Wellness Initiative.

 

May 14

The Morgan County Board of Education will meet May 14 at 5:30 p.m.

 

May 16

The Pilot Club of Decatur will host its 11th annual Charity Golf Tournament May 16 at Point Mallard Golf Course. The four-man scramble will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Lunch will be at noon. Driving range practice will start at 7 a.m. The $300 ($75 per person) entry fee is due May 11. Prizes will be given to the top three teams in each flight. Awards will also be given for the longest drive and closest to the pin. Players could win a car with a hole-in-one for a specific par three. Water Aerobics classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:50 to 7:50 a.m. beginning June 2 at the Hartselle Aquatic Center. The fee is $25 per month or $5 per visit.

 

Morgan County Humane Society, located at 86 Gum Springs Cut Off Road, is a no-kill animal shelter. It meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the shelter. For more information, call 256-773-7222.

Hartselle’s New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Farm Service Agency office on Alabama 36 west of downtown Hartselle. It is open to all who are interested in quilt making, The guild is focused on beginning quilt makers to help them learn how to make a new block each month and new techniques used to make them. Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Glenn Wood and the Crosscut Band is featured. The Hartselle Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays at 8 p.m.; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Friday meeting is a smoking meeting. It includes party room at Sparkman Civic Center, themed invitations, themed decorations, plates, cups, napkins, eating utensils, party favors, games, activities and two party coordinators. Senior Nutrition Center, also known as the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, sing-a-longs, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Groups also participate in evening supper bus trips. Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. The club works with Civitan International to support and work with people in our community with mental and physical disabilities and support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham. Civitan is the only civic club with a research center. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center.
