Travis and Angela Smith opened the Rustic Nail hoping to complement the surrounding antique stores and specialty shops in downtown Hartselle.

Their collection of nostalgic, primitive and reclaimed pieces range from candles and picture frames to hand-made leather wares and custom rustic light fixtures.

“We really wanted to offer a little something for everyone,” Travis said. “We don’t consider ourselves high end, but we do carry a variety of high end items. We offer a wide range of prices, so we can accommodate most any taste.”

“We are really interested in things from past generations,” Angela said. “One of our favorite collections are the Europe2You up-cycled 19th century salvage parts of buildings turned into novelty items. We also are very proud of our Col. Littleton crafted leather bags and other items. We also carry Milkhouse Candles, Colonial Tin Works, Magnolia Lane collegiate gear, Triple Creek picture frames and many more.”

The Smiths have owned their own businesses for over 25 years, but most of their ventures have been in construction, rental properties or painting. This is their first retail business.

“The opportunity presented itself, and it was the right timing while Angela was recovering from neck surgery and needed a way to rest and stay busy at the same time,” Travis said. “We anticipate expanding and adding more lines, but we will just have to play it by ear and see how it goes. We try to make sure every item we carry has some sort of unique quality to them.”

Travis also uses his construction experience to make custom-ordered light fixtures and furniture.

“I have several pieces showcased in the store that I’ve made, but I also take custom orders for lights and furniture,” Travis said. “Most of them are crafted out of reclaimed industrial items. I’ve already had several orders.”

The Rustic Nail held a grand opening April 10 with the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce.
