Congratulations go out this week to the Danville Lady Hawks on winning the area softball championship. They defeated Hamilton and Haleyville during the tournament Thur., April 30, at Danville.

Forrest Chapel United Methodist Church youth and adult leaders met at West Park Sun., April 26 at 5 p.m. Their worship service included a devotional, a skit and a discussion on gossip. Afterward they enjoyed a picnic and fellowship.

Kane Hogan and his parents, Craig and Michelle Hogan returned home to Danville for several days from Memphis. Kane is a Danville High School sophomore and is being treated for leukemia at St. Jude’s. Recently he was in isolation there due to allergies. Our thoughts and prayers are always with the Hogans.

On Sun., May 10, McKendree United Methodist Church had a Decoration Day service for the Herring Cemetery decoration program. Many former and current residents of the Massey community will remember having church in the open-air building at Herring and the old pump organ kept dry by wooden panels. The singing would be spirited, and the lunch was delicious that would be spread on the old pews used as tables.

The pastor at McKendree traditionally preached the memorial sermon. Brother Mike Vest is their pastor currently. May 10 was also Mother’s Day and mothers attending were honored.

Several families have reunions on the second Sunday for lunch at Herring Cemetery and visiting in the afternoon. Individuals and groups gathered there and enjoyed visiting annually after church and lunch.

Denise Wallace and Selena Lindsey, Forrest Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC) youth leaders, accompanied their group to the Casting Crown’s concert Thur., April 23, at the VBCC in Huntsville. The youth had an uplifting experience as some gave reports on the trip to the congregation Sun., April 26, at the 11 a.m. service.

Pam Holmes and David and Tiffany Owens of Massey, John Steven and Laurie Bryant of the Blair community, Mitch and Cristal Owens and Mitchell of Addison and Drew Owens of Birmingham attended the wedding of John Owens and Stacey Davies.

The ceremony and reception were held in the 1800s plantation home at the Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville, Ga., Sat., May 2 at 4:30 p.m. On Fri., May 1, the groom’s parents, Pam Holmes and Mitch Owens of Decatur, hosted the rehearsal dinner. The wedding attendees, the bride’s family, the wedding party, Mitch’s mother, Peggy Owens and his sister, Carol Whitt and her family all of Haleyville enjoyed the meal together.

Forrest Chapel UMC congregation enjoyed the annual women’s day program Sun., April 26, during their regular worship hour. The local units led the service. Celia Vest, president of the Basham Chapel UMC women and North West District UMC women spiritual growth coordinator, was the guest speaker. Her topic was “Follow Bo Peep or Jesus.” She used John 21:17: “If you love me, feed my sheep,” as Jesus was speaking to Peter.

Service to others is how we show our love and concern. The United women’s organization began as early as 1869 as they saw a need for helping with human rights and important issues of the day. They had representation and some authority to aid women worldwide as well as locally and nationwide. The present United Methodist women’s organization is a result of decades of dedication.
