“Pop” Aratzi teen club opening June 5

The Pop Aratzi teen club, located on 2101 County Road 1435 in Vinemont will be opening June 5.

The summer hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. and will be closed on Wednesday and Sunday. The fall hours are still to be determined. The admission charge will be $8.

All teens age 13-19 are welcome to come and hangout at the club for fun and relaxation. The club will have a dance floor, karaoke, life size games, live bands, a DJ, theme nights, snacks and drinks, a selfie booth, free wi-fi, special discount nights, arcade, pool table and much more. Debbie Vest Wade was listed in my Danville News as the pastor of Basham Chapel UMC, however this was incorrect, their pastor is Brother Thomas E. Elder. I am pleased to correct the error with my apologies.

Emily and Nathan MacDonald and Julie Asherbranner of the Massey community attended the Falkville Public Library’s spring open house Tues., May 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. Pam MacDonald, the board Treasurer and librarian, Jenny Asherbranner, helped with hosting the event. Tina Rogers, Jane Hill, Rhona Summerford, Marie Sivley and Kay Farrer brought food, decorated and greeted the visitors.

Jenny would like to express her appreciation to all those who assisted and special thanks to those who attended. Everyone enjoyed the extensive stamp collection on display by David Kaiser of Falkville.

David told about many of the stamps. He was career military and has U.S. and foreign stamps that have interesting history. Fifty-two attendees had time to browse, check out books, get a library card, look at stamps, enjoy refreshments and visit.

Special congratulations go out this week to Jeremy and Leslie McAbee on the birth of their son Barrett Ray McAbee. Barrett was born on May 7, 2015, and he weighed 8 pounds and 6 ounces and was 20 and 1/2 inches long. Barrett’s proud grandparents are Jerry and Janet Reynolds and Gerald and Reginia McAbee. His great-grandparents are Hazel McCormick Parker, J.W. and Pat Franklin, Peggy Reynolds and the late Dwain Reynolds, Ravean McAbee and the late Raymond McAbee.

The members of Shady Grove Baptist Church still have their 125th anniversary cookbooks for sale for $10 each.

Representing Corinth West Baptist Church in the Women of Joy conference was Dana Henslee, Christie Guthrie, Patty Condo, Gayle Miller, Dawn Shedd, Kamee Shedd Morgan and Mykal and Sarah Hill. Angela Thomas was the keynote speaker Fri. to Sun., May 15-17. This is an annual conference and part of Phil Waldrep’s Ministry. “Stronger” was the theme for this spring. The Louisville Kentucky Conference Center and Galt House Hotel hosted the conference.

Recent visitors of Doris Herring of Massey were Zana and Lynn Thompson, Jack Harvey, Frances Rowe, Jimmy and Freida Jones, Jeff and Rhonda Thompson, Kay Farrer, Esther Beachy and Roland and Alice Jean Fontenot of Boyce, La.

Mt. Nebo Baptist Church at Massey will have their Vacation Bible School June 1-5, from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme is “Off the map” about following Jesus. The classes and activities are for pre-k through sixth grade. All area children and visitors are welcome. The family night commencement program will be Fri., June 5, at 6:30 p.m. and consists of pizza, awards and certificates for everyone.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Rufus Penn of Massey community who is now at Summerford Nursing Home and Carmen DeButy who is having biopsies and other tests done.

Also, remember Bettie Hardwick Morris of Lebanon community who was at UAB Hospital for stroke recovery. She is now at her daughters, Jeannie Alexander’s home on Herring Road at Massey.

Danville High School had the Honors Day awards ceremony Fri., May 1, in the gymnasium. The 2015 graduation was Tues., May 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the O.B. Owens stadium. There were two Valedictorians and three Salutatorians for the Class of 2015.

Christian love and heartfelt sympathy goes out this week to Joyce Weaver of Massey on the passing of her father, Paul Yoder. The Emmanuel Mennonite members attended the funeral service in Orrville, Sat., May 2.

Connie Gillott was hostess for the Neel UMC women’s meeting Wed., May 6, at 7 p.m., Susan Long presided at the meeting. Guest speaker Jennifer Gillott from Oak Ridge UMC told about her recent mission trip to Honduras. Connie served refreshments to fourteen members after the program.

Wayne Nisly of Massey was ordained Bishop at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church on Hwy 55 West, Sun., May 3, at 6:30 p.m. Brother Perry Miller of Good Springs, Tenn. was the guest speaker. There were many visitors for the Sunday ordination and everyone enjoyed a fellowship supper afterward.

Belated happy wedding anniversary wishes go out to David and Ruth Sparkman on their 54th anniversary and James and Sandra Roden on their 48th anniversary, all on May 6, Bobby and Nell Dobbins on their 34th anniversary on May 11, Jerry and Janet Reynolds on their 34th anniversary on May 16, Mike and Kelly McLamb as they celebrated their 14th anniversary on May 19.

Special prayers go out this week for Debbie Wade and for Fay Hall White of Danville who is now at Falkville U.S.A. Health Care Center.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes to Jimmy and Aleshia Dobbins as they celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on May 20 to Jeremy and Leslie McAbee as they celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary on May 21.

Shanda Garner gave the devotional at the Corinth West Baptist women’s group meeting on Sun., May 3, at 10 a.m. Christie Guthrie served a breakfast casserole and sweet rolls, coffee and juice. During the business session, the unit decided on a menu for senior citizen’s fish fry on Tues., May 19, at 11 a.m. Their annual women’s conference will be Sat., June 20 at 9:30 a.m.

Jimmy and Helen Hardwick Allen of Prattville visited Phillip and Jeannie Alexander and Bettie Hardwick Morris of Massey Mon., May 11. Helen is a former Massey resident. She and Jimmy spent Mother’s Day weekend with their daughter Martha Olsen and husband Chris in Petersburg, Tenn.

Lulu’s Shop in Falkville had their grand opening on Sat., May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured in the store are unique gifts and handmade items from area crafters and artists for all occasions. The business hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lulu’s is located on Hwy 31 south by the former Gibbons antique building on the corner. The owner of Lulu’s is Michelle Walker.

Jenny Asherbranner, librarian and Rhona Summerford, president of the Falkville Library Board attended the awards lunch at Falkville’s VFW on Culver Road Sat., May 2, at 11 a.m. The Auxiliary and the men’s group served fried chicken, sides and desserts to those attending from public service and agencies in the area. The library appreciated the VFW and DAV support and donations each year. Don Collum is the Commander of the VFW.

Christian love and heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Irene Dutton Pope. Irene grew up in the Penn’s community and married Bob Pope. They made their home on Andrew’s Chapel Road and raised their family of five children there.

Irene attended Friendship Baptist Church near Danville and Round Top community church. Her oldest daughter, Dana Lamb in her eulogy, said that her three sisters took turns spending the night with her mother for twenty years. Irene was dedicated to taking care of her husband and family and her Dutton family. She was buried at Friendship Cemetery Mon., May 4. Her 100th birthday would have been in July. Dana and Mike Lamb live in Knoxville, Tenn.
