The Hartselle High School track team wrapped up their season with a team banquet recently, but they are already looking forward to next season.

The girls track team saw success this season, shattering three school records and earning a 13th place finish overall at the state meet in Gulf Shores.

Abigail Davis placed third in the 3,200-meter run in the state competition, earning All-State recognition.

The girls 4×100-meter, 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay teams broke the standing school record. Macie Holder, Natalie Zuck, Shannah Alexander and Hannah Wiley are the 4×100 and 4×400 relay members, and Billie Shelton, Reagan Bowling, Davis and Holder are the 4×800 relay members.

Megan Zuck won the Class 6A Section 4 Most Valuable Player at the sectional meet in Fort Payne against 15 other teams.

The boys track team finished 15th overall in Gulf Shores with several people placing in the top 10 individually.

Chase Barrett broke the school record for the 400-meter dash. He also accepted an offer to run track at the University of Alabama in Huntsville this fall.

Head coach Nick Collier was pleased with the success the teams saw in his first year as head coach.

“We had a pretty good season with several victories,” Collier said. “I expected us to perform better at state, but we had some injuries and a few misses. I really thought the girls would be in the top five and the boys would find the top 10, but they still came a long way this season. We had a lot of good scoring athletes that moved away before this season and a few state champs who didn’t come out this year. Just about everyone set a personal record this year, and we definitely made a lot of progress.”

The girls won first in the Deshler and Austin meets, second in the Scottsboro meet and third in the Cullman and Cullman Pre-Sectional meets out of their 10 meets this season. The boys won first in the Deshler and Austin meets and second in the Cullman Pre-Sectional meet.

Collier said they will be having summer conditioning workouts starting in June.

“We want to keep everyone in shape, so we will be running and lifting weights in the off-season,” Collier said. “We have several that run cross country, which has already started conditioning, so that’s good. We want to be as prepared as possible for next season since our boys will be losing seven seniors who were some of our top scorers, and the girls will lose two seniors. I think the girls will have a lot of potential next year, and the boys will be working hard to rebuild with only two seniors next year.”

Collier expects the girls to finish in the top three in the state next year if they perform to their potential.

“Abigail Davis has a chance at a state title in either the 1,600 or 3,200-meter or both,” Collier said. “She’s our strength on the distance side, and she’s very consistent. Megan Zuck also has a chance at a state title in the triple jump. She’s showing a lot of progress and promise.”

Collier said they are more of a sprinting team, but their throwing and jumping is really coming along.

“Most of our throwers and jumpers are young, which is good,” Collier said. “They are getting some good experience, and will be able to progress before they graduate. We are ready to see what we can do next year across the board.”
