Young named Athletic Director

The Hartselle Board of Education named Hartselle High School Assistant Principal Bob Young the new athletic director.

Young was the Athletic Director from 2003-2010 before HHS counselor Johnny Berry resigned from the position to take the principal position at Brookhaven Middle School in Decatur.

Young will be the Athletic Director for Hartselle’s high school and junior high, which includes being in charge of the athletic department budget, scheduling home events and handling athletic eligibility.

The board also approved a bid from Covington Floor Company to replace the gymnasium floor at HJHS.

HJHS Principal Robbie Smith said they hope the project is finished around October when basketball season starts.

“Volleyball will start practice Aug. 3 in the intermediate school gym,” Smith said. “We are comfortable with moving things around, so we’re sure we will work it out.”

Hartselle City Schools Superintendent said the project is set to start next week.

The board approved a 10 cents increase in all al la carte items in HCS lunchrooms. This will not change the base price of lunches. They also approved several child nutrition bids for food and equipment vendors.

The board also approved four out-of-district students, three at Hartselle High School and one in elementary school.

Wilson said that put their total number of out-of-district students right around 560 this year.

“That number is right around or just above what we usually have each year,” Wilson said. “There’s still the potential that we will get a few more that need to be approved before school starts, especially with Polaris coming in.”

In other personnel matters, the board approved the following actions:

  • Long-term substitute Steve Knight to fill the absence of Bethany Simpson, eighth-grade math teacher at HJHS.
