Sixth annual Meagan McCain Memorial Barrel Race set for Aug. 7-9 in Priceville
The sixth annual Meagan McCain Memorial Barrel Race will be Aug. 7-9 at the Morgan County Celebration Arena on Highway 67 in Priceville.
The event, which was previously held in Texas, serves as a memorial to the life of Meagan McCain and raises funds for rodeo scholarships and drunk driving advocacy. Although previous years have included a roping competition, the barrel event will be expanded over three days and the roping event will be discontinued.
The gates will open Friday for an exhibition from 4-7 p.m., and the barrel races will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s exhibition will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with races beginning at 1 p.m. The last day of competition will begin Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission to the events is free.
McCain, a native of Piedmont, held numerous rodeo titles including Georgia Junior Rodeo Association member, All-Around Champion Cowgirl in 2002 and 2004, Georgia and Texas state finalist multiple years and Girls Reserve All-Around Champion of the Grand Canyon Region Finals.
She was killed by a drunk driver in 2009 days before her 20th birthday. More information about McCain’s story can be found at the Meagan McCain Memorial Fund Facebook page.
