The Danville celebrates their first season opening win since 2012 | Special to the Enquirer

In athletics, it is often said that one game does not make your season. One win does not make your season and one loss does not break your season. The vast majority of the time, the people who make those statements are correct. One win, especially in your season opener, should not be cause for celebration but for the 2015 Danville Hawks and their fans, one game, one win is certainly reason to believe that this edition of Danville football has the potential to make fall Friday nights fun again.

Last Friday night, the Danville Hawks traveled to Cold Springs and defeated the Eagles 21-20. Just as the score should indicate, it wasn’t easy. Cold Springs got on the board first, midway through the opening period to take a 7-0 lead. The Eagles would not light up the scoreboard again until the 4^th period.  Danville, meanwhile, would put three consecutive touchdowns on the board. The Hawks first two scores came on runs by Peyton Colburn and Colton McCay. Logan Jaep added the PAT after each and Danville would take a 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

Danville would stretch its lead to 21-7 early in the third after capitalizing on a Cold Springs turnover. Jackson Locklear got the final touchdown of the evening for the Hawks and Jaep add the extra point. Cold Springs would then score twice in the final period with the last touchdown coming with just under 4 minutes left in the game. The Hawks special teams unit then stepped up as they blocked the potential game tying extra point.

Cold Springs then kicked to the Hawks and the Danville offense was unable to move the ball giving Cold Springs one last chance to win the game. The Eagles drove inside the Hawk twenty-five but a missed field goal attempt with less than 30 seconds left in the game gave the visiting Danville Hawks a well-deserved 21-20 road victory.

The win means that Danville, for the first time since 2012, begins the year 1-0. The Hawks will attempt to go to 2-0 on the year this Friday night at home versus the Vinemont Eagles (0-1). Vinemont lost their season opener to Addison (42-33).
