Funeral for William Cleedoth Barnes, 84, of Decatur will be Sat., at 1 p.m. at the Courtland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brad Eades officiating and Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home directing. The body will lie in state from noon to service time.
Visitation will be Fri., Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Courtland City Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes died Wed., Sept. 23, 2015, at his residence. He was born Aug. 27, 1931, to William Lewis and Isa Butler Barnes. He was a graduate of Coffee High School where he was an Eagle Scout. Mr. Barnes graduated from Florence State Teachers College and attended the University of Alabama Medical School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Barnes owned and operated B & G Greenhouses and Barnes Nursery. He was a member of the Decatur Kiwanis Club and the Courtland Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Decatur. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Mary Ann Gilchrist Barnes, his parents, and a sister, Joyce Barnes James.
He is survived by his siblings, James Lewis Barnes, Glenda Barnes Stone, Ellen Barnes Jennings and Marvin Russell Barnes; his children, William Cleedoth Barnes, Jr. (Paula), John Louis “Toby” Barnes (Ginger), Mary Louise Barnes Ogle (Greg) and James Gilchrist Barnes (Tammy); his grandchildren, Mary Virginia Barnes Baugh (Greg), Elizabeth Haywood Barnes Hicks (Ryan), John Louis Barnes, Jr., Gregory Stephen Ogle, Jr. and James Paul William Ogle; and his great-grandchildren, William Gregory Baugh and Tess Lane Hicks.
Pallbearers will be Bingham Edwards, Bert Pippen, Darrell Grimsley, Mike Hotchkiss, James Gilchrist III, John Gilchrist, Pryor Rice and John Templeton. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Lee Damsky, Sammy Stone, Fred Goff and all of the members of the Moulton Street Culture Club International.
