Cordova gives Danville rainy homecoming loss
Three 1st quarter touchdowns by Cordova’s Javion Hill helped the Blue Devils defeat the Danville Hawks 30-6 spoiling homecoming on a rainy Friday night in Danville. Hill’s touchdowns came on runs of 1, 6 and 4 yards as Cordova scored on all three opening period possessions to take a 22-0 lead. Danville got on the board early in the 2nd period on a 1-yard run by Ryan Self. The two-point attempt failed and the Hawks trailed 22-6. The Danville drive covered 64 yards in 10 plays. Big plays in the drive included runs of 21 and 17 yards by Self and Landon Tidwell respectively.
Cordova would score the final points of the game on a 59 yard pass midway through the 2nd period. The Blue Devils converted their two-point try to take a 30-6 lead at the half.
The 2nd half was a defensive struggle with neither team really threatening to score. Cordova drove as far as the Hawk 21 while Danville would not cross the 50 in the final two quarters. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-2 in the region and 4-3 overall. Danville will travel to Hamilton next Friday night for a key region game. A victory by the Hawks would almost certainly send Danville to the playoffs while a loss would make the following week’s region finale at home against Haleyville a must win.
On a side note, congratulations to Lexi Fagan as the lovely senior was named Danville’s homecoming queen for 2015.
