Hartselle to change traffic control devices
All Way (Four Way) STOP signs to be installed at two downtown intersections.
During the next two weeks beginning December 1, 2015, the City of Hartselle will be taking steps to replace outdated traffic control signals at two downtown intersections with new ALL WAY STOP signs.
The new alternative traffic control devices will be installed at the intersections of Sparkman St. and Hickory St. as well as Sparkman St. and Chestnut St. Traffic approaches to these intersections, from all directions, will soon be required to STOP and treat the intersections as an ALL WAY STOP condition, typically referred to as a “4-Way Stop”.
A 2014 downtown traffic engineering study determined that the current traffic signals were no longer justified as suitable traffic control devices for these intersections. The study recommended removing the signal heads and utilizing multi-way STOP conditions as the appropriate alternative traffic control devices.
During the two-week intersection improvement period, newly painted crosswalks and STOP bars will be placed on the roadways along with four STOP signs being installed at each intersection and temporarily covered.
At 12:00 p.m. on December 21, 2015, the temporary coverings will be removed and the existing traffic control signals will be placed in ALL WAY RED flash mode. The City will observe traffic behavior during the initial 30-day flash mode period and make a determination at that time if the adjustment period warrants signal heads for 60 more days before they are removed.
