As the Brewer Lady Patriots prepared to play in the DOC tournament, they hoped to avoid the same fate as fellow Morgan County team the Hartselle Tigers who were defeated in the previous game by Spain Park. Brewer would also have to contend with a 7A school as they took on the Mountain Brook Spartans.

Brewer struck first taking a 2-0 lead but the Spartans wouldn’t let that last long. Mountain Brook quickly raced out to a 9-2 lead. Brewer would attempt to climb back in as a steal and shot by freshmen McCarley Northway cut the lead to 12-6. A three pointer by Temera Chatman would cut it even closer at 14-9. However, Mountain Brook raced back ahead ending the first quarter with a 19-10 lead. Mountain Brook would make it even worse in the second as they lit up the scoreboard while the Patriots struggled to get anything going. At the end of the first half the Spartans held a 32-17 lead over the Patriots.

As the second half started it looked very grim for the Patriots as they were down 15 and struggled to stop the Spartans in the first half, but they weren’t done just yet.

Brooke Childers nailed back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to 32-23. Henslee Brindley would close a slow quarter by cutting the lead to 38-27.

The Patriot’s offense would finally explode in the fourth quarter as a flurry of three point shots got them right back in the game. Childers started the quarter off with back to back three’s to cut the lead to 38-33. Victoria Roberts would follow that up with a three of her own to cut it to 40-37. Presley Craft with also knock in a three to pull Brewer to within just two points at 49-47. A final three pointer by Childers would give Brewer its first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 50-49. With just seconds left in the game, Brewer had come roaring back from the dead and now held a 53-51 lead. Mountain Brook had time for one last possession as they drove the ball down the court. As the Spartan player drove inside, she then kicked it back out to another Spartan who released the ball for a game winning three at the buzzer.

Player of the game: Brook Childers. This wasn’t much of a hard decision as Childers delivered a great effort in this game. Down by 15 at halftime the Patriot’s desperately needed some help for their struggling offense and Childers answered the call. Childers was on fire behind the three-point line in the second half and helped ignite Brewer who almost came back and won this game
