Brewer High School soccer player and cross-country runner Asher Gipner has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the Auburn University at Montgomery War Hawks.

The signing took place in the school gym February 3. His parents, coaches and teammates were present to offer their congratulations and best wishes.

A senior with a 3.9 GPA, Gipner has played soccer for Brewer since he was in the eighth grade and competed as a distance runner with the school’s track team. He played for Madison’s United Soccer Club in 2015 and competed with Crossroads, a travel soccer team from Decatur for several years.

Gipner, a middle fielder, said he is excited to have the opportunity to take his soccer game to the next level and looks forward to being a War Hawk.

“AUM is a nice school,” he pointed out. “Their soccer coach showed a lot of personal interest in me when I visited the campus.”

Gipner said he would pursue a career in math when he enrolls at AUM next fall.

Coach Michael Drinkard described Gipner as a player with hustle, a positive attitude, great skills and leadership ability.

“We’ve had players who walked on at the college level and played,” Drinkard recalled, “but Asher is the first player we’ve  had to sign with a college as a senior.

“His motivation and work ethic is what impressed me a lot,” said Coach Eusebio Samuel. He is very dedicated and coachable”

“He’s a versatile player and is willing to move from one position to another when that’s where the team needs him,” said Coach Trevor RedPath.  “I’m proud of him and I’m  thankful I had the opportunity to coach him.”
