Funeral for L.E. Shaneyfelt, 86, of Hartselle, was Wed., Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter M. Blackman Jr. and the Rev. Charles Stone officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Hartselle Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Shaneyfelt died Sun., Feb. 21, 2016, in Hartselle. He was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Hartselle to Clarence Elmer Shaneyfelt and Anna Pearl Hendon Shaneyfelt. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Benjamin Edward Murphy; two brothers, Bobby Ray and M.D. Shaneyfelt; and five sisters: Eva Martin, Evelyn Vest, MIldred Harvel, Frances Burns and Anna Mae Crow.
Mr. Shaneyfelt was retired from a long career in residential construction and real estate development. He enjoyed doing backhoe work, and was known for helping anyone who needed a tree removed or a cow buried. He was a charter member of East Highland Baptist Church and a leader in the construction of the church structures and served as a deacon and current trustee. In younger days, he played baseball as a pitcher and was recruited for professional sports. He translated those skills to developing baseball fields in Hartselle and serving as a coach for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Raley Shaneyfelt of Hartselle; a daughter, Barbara Henry (Thomas) of Decatur, foster son, Robert W. Looney (Nancy) of Hartselle; a brother, Billy Eugene Shaneyfelt (Frances) of Hartselle; grandsons, James Michael Murphy of New York City, and 1st Lieutenant Logan Henry, U.S. Army (Kayla) of Fort Riley, Kansas; granddaughters, Angie Lemmond (Lonnie) of Dothan and Libby Bryan (Shane) of Falkville; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers were Joe Crow, Larry Crow, Brad Shaneyfelt, Tim Clemons,Tommy Hawkins, and Billy Jack Shaneyfelt.
Honorary pallbearers were Charles Rhea, Fred Ray, Carl Taylor, Burford Lawrence, Joe Ward, Willard Coffey, Robert Clemons, Bill Teague, Bill Spiers, Noah Webster, Gordon Roberts, Bill Smelser, Roy Wallace and David Jones.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations to be made to the Hospice of the Valley Decatur or the East Highland Building Fund.
