The Brewer Lady Patriots have made quite the tear in the first part of the 2016-17 season as they went into the Christmas break with a 14-1 record. The Patriots hoped to keep it going when they participated in the DOC tournament at Decatur high school. Brewer took on the Spain Park Lady Jaguars, who is ranked in the top five in 7A, in the first round.

It was a back and forth affair the entire game as neither team could sustain a big lead. Henslee Brindley and Jacie Andrews opened the game with scores to give Brewer a 5-2 lead. Spain Park took the lead 8-5 but five points from McCarley Northway gave it back to the Patriots 10-8. Shyan Flack added two free throws and Northway hit another three as Brewer took a 17-14 lead. However, the Jaguars ended the first quarter on a 4-0 run to take an 18-17 lead.

In the second quarter Brewer kept their foot on the gas. Brindlee and Andrews notched three point shots to help give the Pats a 25-22 lead. Spain Park took the lead back later at 28-27. Abby Hufnagle and Madisen Adams helped trim the lead to two twice but the Jaguars took a four point advantage at 37-33 into the half.

Spain Park took their largest lead of the game at 40-33 at the beginning of the second half. Katelyn Childs tied the game at 47-47 with a three pointer and then took the lead 53-50 with another, but the Jaguars still took the lead 58-54 into the fourth.

The fourth quarter featured plenty of drama. Flack tied the game at 64-64 and then Leisha Steger stole the inbounds pass which led to the Patriots taking a 66-64 lead. Flack later added two free throws to make it 68-65 with seven seconds left. Spain Park missed their game tying three pointer, but the shooter was fouled giving them three free throw shots. The Jaguar nailed all three to send the game into overtime tied at 68-68.

Brewer’s Shyan Flack came up big twice in the first overtime as she tied the game at 73 and then at 75, the second time being with 35 seconds. Spain Park missed a shot to take the lead with four seconds left, but the ball went out of bounds on Brewer. The Jaguars then nailed a game winning shot but the refs waived it off as too late which sent the game into double overtime.

The Jaguars took control of the game in the second overtime and went on to win 89-84.

Shyan Flack led the Patriots with 23 while McCarley Northway and Jacie Andrews had 18. Northway had a double double in the game.
