The Staff at the Danville-Neel Elementary School will be hosting a “Valentine Dance” for the third and fourth grade classes on Fri., Feb. 10. The third dance time will be from 11:45 a.m. till 1:15 p.m. and the time for the fourth grade dance will be from 1:15 p.m. till 2:30 p.m. There will not be an admission charge. They will have concessions and there will also be an ice cream bar with a charge of $2.00 for one trip. Tara Green Morrow thanks everyone for their support.

I want to share a story taken from The Heritage of Morgan County, Alabama Book which was published by “The Morgan County Genealogy Society” . The story is “Rocky Ford School” and was submitted and written by Rhona H. Summerford of Falkville Alabama.

Rocky Ford School-The school was built in 1910 after Will Wallace donated an acre of land for the school. It derived its name from the abundance of rock in the soil and from the small stream of water that flowed across the road during rainy weather which required being ‘forded” by most local residents.

Rose Hargett, in addition to other men in the community, constructed the one room school. Over a ten-year period, the school began to outgrow existing space and facilities, therefore, another room was added. The school served students in grades one through six, who could walk to school. Later, seventh and eighth grades were added to the original one through six.

Rocky Ford School served as a center for activities in the community as well as a learning center. On some occasions, church services and revival meetings were held in the school building. The grounds featured a basketball court where both children and adults gathered.

Miss Kathryn Edwards, was a teacher at the school from 1943 to 1952. In 1943, the world was involved in World War II. Schools everywhere suffered, as there was a teacher shortage. Emergency certificates were granted to prospective teachers with high school diplomas.

Miss Edwards became the principal teacher after teaching first and second grades at Neel School located one mile east Neel on Iron Man Road. Her salary was $55.00 a month in 1942, and she received a raise to $79.00 a month the following year.
