No Fences Cowboy Church of Morgan County is a Christ-Centered nondenominational church, where people from all backgrounds are welcomed. It doesn’t matter if you live in the city or work the ranch, ride an iron horse or a quarter horse, wear boots or tennis shoes. Our goal is the same today as when we first started, Church for the unchurched. Cowboy Church is done simple: Good music, Straight Preaching and Great Fellowship. Here you’ll find a lively atmosphere, good food and coffee and lots of friends you haven’t met yet. Come as you are, sit down and consider yourself part of the family.

I am pleased this week to share a story from The Heritage of Morgan County, Alabama published by the Morgan County Genealogy Society. The title of the story is ” Mt. Nebo Baptist Church” and the story was submitted by Charlotte H. Beavers.

“Mt. Nebo Baptist Church is located on Alabama Highway 157 and Mt. Nebo Road in the rural southwest Morgan County community of Massey. The church was established in October 1869. The first church building burned in 1885 and the present sanctuary was built in 1886 on three acres of land deeded to the church by James W. and Elizabeth E. Gibson. In early years, the building was also used for public school. The first pastor was Reverend W. C. Witt who served from October 1869 to March 1872. Other early pastors include W.W.Wilhite, W.B.Carter, S.R.C.Adams, W.T.Cobbs, J.B.Huckabee and J.D.McClanahan. There have been at least twenty-seven other pastors from 1900 to the present. The first deacons on record were Richard B. Gibson, John B. Gibson, J.R.Witt and R. B. Minter. The first Sunday School report was recorded March 27, 1887. Training Union work was first mentioned in the 1943 minutes. Mt. Nebo Baptist Church was affiliated with the Muscle Shoals Baptist Association in 1881, but became a member of the Morgan County Baptist Association in 1919. The church sanctuary built in 1886 is still in use. There have been several additions and improvements made to the building in recent years. As of March 22, 1998, Mt. Nebo Baptist Church has seventy members on roll.”
