THE HISTORY OF NO BUSINESS CREEK

I am pleased this week to share a story from the book The Heritage of Morgan County, Alabama published by the Morgan County Genealogy Society. The titled of the story is “No Business Creek” and it was written by Kelly Kazek on June 27, 1997 for the Decatur Daily. (No Business Creek) “Meandering for miles through Morgan and Lawrence Counties, No Business Creek seems to mind its own business. It doesn’t often call attention to itself by leaving its banks and sometimes even goes dry in places during the hot summer months. The creek runs the property of Jimmy Stephenson of Danville and also crosses Danville Road and Alabama Hwy 36 before dumping into Flint Creek. Stephenson, 64, said he heard this tale about the creek. ‘Years ago, people from the western end of the county would come to Hartselle to get supplies several times a year. It was a two-day trip.’ An accident on one such trip led to the creek’s name. ‘When this fellow got to Hartselle, he got a surprise. He headed back home and got stuck in the creek. As the story goes, he said the creek had no business being there anyhow.’ Robert Long gives another version of the story. ‘The story I got is there was a fellow in Oak Ridge who wanted to go to a revival at Forest Chapel. The water washed up and washed across the bridge, so the man said, ‘I’ll swim it,’ and he drowned. “After that, folks said, ‘You ain’t got no business being in that creek when the water is up,’ said Long, a Decatur attorney who was raised about half a mile from the creek. Stephenson guessed the creek to be as long as 30 miles, and Long said it’s about six miles as the crow flies.”
