Hartselle names Superintendent finalists

The search to replace Vic Wilson as Hartselle superintendent is almost over as Hartselle has named its top finalists for the job. The four finalists are Jim Guinn, Dee Dee Jones, Alan Miller and Robbie Smith. Jones and Smith are currently employed in Hartselle City Schools. The position of Hartselle Superintendent was announced on June 1 and June 30 was the application deadline. After holding public engagement meetings, screening the applicants and reviewing the applicants with the school board the finalists were chosen.

Jim Guinn is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Russellville City Schools. Guinn has 25 years of experience as a Teacher, Assistant principal and Principal in Lawrence County, Franklin County, Tuscumbia City and Russellville City Schools. Guinn has an Ed.D., Educational Leadership degree from Samford University, a Ed.s., Educational Leadership degree from UNA, an M.S., Educational Leadership degree from UNA and a B.S. Math/Chemistry Education degree from UNA. Guinn is a 2009 graduate of the Alabama Superintendent’s Academy and a retired Lt. Col. of the U.S. Army Reserve with 21 years of service.

Dee Dee Jones is currently the Assistant Superintendent at Hartselle City Schools. Jones has 28 years of experience as a Teacher, Reading Specialist, Assistant Principal, Principal, Secondary and Career Teach Supervisor and Director of learning and teaching for Ft. Payne, Decatur and Hartselle City Schools. Jones has an Assoc. of Science Degree from NE Ala. State Jr. College, a B.S. in Elementary Education, an M.A. in Education from UAB and a PhD. in Educational Leadership from UAB and the University of Alabama.

Alan Miller is the current Superintendent at Haleyville City Schools. Miller has 15 years of experience as a Teacher, Principal, Exceptional Students Coordinator and Director at Eufaula City Schools, Russell County, Lannett County and Lee County schools. Miller has a B.A. in History and Psychology from Auburn University, a M.S. in Special Education from Troy University and a PhD. in Educational Administration from Auburn University.

Robbie Smith is the current Principal at Hartselle Junior High School. Smith has 15 years of experience as a teacher, coach and counselor in Arab and Morgan County Schools. Smith has a B.S. in Biology and English, a M.S. in Secondary Education, a School Counseling Certification from Alabama A&M and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. Interviews will be conducted in public sessions on July 25th at 6 and 7:30 p.m. and on July 27 at 5 and 6:30 p.m.

In addition to approving the finaists, the Hartselle school board approved the following items:

  • 27 new out of district students
  • Contract with Redstone Federal Credit Union
  • Job Description for a new accounting supervisor
  • The change in employee lunch price from $3.10 to $3.20
  • 2017-18 salary schedules and supplements

The contract with Redstone will allow for the bank to move ahead with plans for their new school bank that will be located in Hartselle High School. The plan is to give Hartselle students a taste of what banking is like. They’re will be a small safe located at the school but not a full vault and security will be supplied and ran by Redstone.
