Reading Round-Up Book Club for the 2017 Adult Reading Challenge- Adults 18 and older are invited to our Reading Round-Up Book Club, where we discuss what we’re reading for the 5th annual Adult Reading Challenge. The atmosphere is casual so bring your lunch, stay for 15 minutes or the full 2 hours, and talk books! You can sign up for the challenge or get stamps for books read at the Book Club meeting. The Great American Eclipse Program- On Monday, August 21, 2017 all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Learn the science behind the eclipse and when, how, and where to best view it safely through this interactive presentation for all ages. The program will be presented by Kevin Alspaugh, lead presenter/astronomer at the US Space and Rocket Center and James Brelsford, a retired aerospace engineer and astronomer from US Space and Rocket Center. The program will be held on Aug. 3, 207 at 2:30 p.m. in the Youth Services Department at Decatur Public Library. Aug. 5

Chapter 2212 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, representing Cullman and Morgan Counties, will hold their annual Memorial Service on Sat., August 5, starting at 10 A.M. at the Purple Heart Monument in Sparkman Park, Hartselle. Major General Allan Elliott of Redstone Arsenal will be the guest speaker. Senator Arthur Orr, Representative Terri Collins, Cullman County Commissioner Garry Marchman, and Hartselle Mayor Randy Garrison will participate in the ceremony. Sparkman Under the Lights – On Sat., Aug. 5, Sparkman Soccer Complex will host a Disc Golf Tournament. Registration is from 2 to 2:30 p.m., Pro cost is $100 and Amateur cost is $50. This event is a PDGA sanctioned C-TAER event. There will be a player meeting from 3 to 3:45 p.m. There will be two rounds, the first is at 4 p.m., the second round is at 9 p.m. and the awards ceremony is at 11:30 p.m. There will be prizes. Free Movie Night at Decatur Public Library- This month the free movies will star Humphrey Bogart. See him win Audrey Hepburn from his playboy brother on Aug. 10. On Aug. 24 he stars with Mary Astor in the movie version of Dashiell Hammett’s most famous novel. Come Read to a Therapy Dog at Decatur Public Library- This program, courtesy of our friends at the Decatur Alabama Kennel Club, encourages children to read by providing non-judgmental, furry friends to listen to them practice reading. Bring in your reluctant reader to give them a chance to practice with a new canine friend. Advanced sign-up encouraged but not required. Hartselle Aquatic Center hours of operation are as follows: Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. 10 a.m. -6 p.m., Tue. and Thur. 10 a.m. -8 p.m. and Sun. 1 p.m. -6 p.m. Admission prices will be $10 for ages 13 and older, $8 for ages 6-12, $5 for ages 3-5 and ages 2 and under is free. Aerobics- Ladies, join instructor Mellonie Chappell, on Mon., Wed. and Fri. at the civic center at 8 a.m. for a refreshing morning workout. The class is suitable for all ages. Please bring a mat for floor exercises. Any additional equipment is provided. The fee is $25 per month.

Tumbling- This class, instructed by Mellonie Chappell, is designed for children ages 5 and older. They will learn basic tumbling skills. Classes will be on Mon. from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m at the civic center. The fee is $40 per month.

JMK Martial Arts- Join JMK Martial Arts & Fitness at the Hartselle Civic Center and build a more confident you! Exciting martial arts and fitness classes are available for kids and adults. Classes are divided into age groups as follows; Pre-Kubs (ages 3-4), Lil Kubs (ages 5-7), Kid Kubs (ages 8-10), Jr. Kubs (ages 11-14) and adults (ages 15 and older). Hartselle Public Library offers Preschool Storytime every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Senior Nutrition Center, also called the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registered participants are welcome to stay for lunch provided by the Commission on Aging. Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Hindsight is featured. Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center.
