After weather canceled what was supposed to be their home opener last week, The Brewer Lady Patriots opened with the West Morgan Lady Rebels this past week. Expectations are high this season for second year coach Amy Keel and her Lady Patriot’s squad, who are the defending county champions.
The Rebels gave the Patriots all they could handle on this night. Brewer took a five-point lead over the Rebels late in set one thanks to a kill from Shyan Flack and a big block from McCarley Northway. Brewer went on to win set one after West Morgan hit the ball out of bounds.
In the second set, Brewer looked poised to go for the sweep after the Patriots took a 20-17 lead behind three points from Carly Fairbanks. However, the Rebels came storming back and took the comeback win 25-23 after the Patriots hit the ball out of bounds.
Brewer got the deciding win in the third set. Leisha Steger got the game winning point as Brewer beat West Morgan 15-9 in set three to win the match 2-1. Shyan Flack finished the game with 10 kills and 4 blocks while Carly Fairbanks finished with 6 kills and 8 blocks. McCarley Northway had 5 kills, 5 blocks and 15 assists for the game and Joanie Lang finished with 10 digs.
Head coach Amy Keel was pleased with her team’s first match. “It’s always good to start the season with a win,” Keel said. “I thought the girls played well for their first match. I saw things we need to improve on but it was a good match.”
Brewer fell in their first area match against the Albertville Aggies 3-2. They won sets two and four 25-16 and 25-23, but lost the other three by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 15-12. The Lady Patriots defeated Southside 2-0.
