Sept. 14

Free Movie Night- In honor of Decatur native Dean Jones birthday we are showing the classic Disney movie about a Volkswagen beetle with a mind of its own. Doors will open at 6:15pm and the movie starts at 6:30pm. Licensing restrictions prevent us from printing titles here, but information is available at www.decatur.lib.al.us.

Sept. 15

Depot Days Activities: Youth Football Pep Rally- Join us for a night to celebrate the Hartselle Youth Football teams and cheerleaders on Fri., Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hartselle Farmer’s Market.

 

3rd Friday Downtown- Come visit Decatur Public Library from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 3rd Friday Downtown! We will have information about upcoming events, free books for children and more. Sept. 16

First Christian Church will have free handicap parking for Depot Days. There will be a shuttle. Please have your handicap decal visible.

 

37th Annual Depot Days- The Depot Days Festival rolls into Hartselle Sept. 16, 2017, bringing a day of free family-friendly fun and entertainment to the historic depot and downtown area. Hosted by the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce, the annual event is a tribute to the railroad industry and its contribution to Hartselle and the North Alabama region. In addition to the one-day celebration, there are several activities planned throughout the week leading up to the event. Depot Days Festival offers a car, truck and motorcycle show, music, an art show, crafts, a tractor and engine show, and a variety of fun and games for children. Slated to perform are The Mighty Electric St. Jude Band, sponsored by Decatur Morgan Hospital, Maury Lane and The Dozens. Runners will take to the streets for the Half-Marathon, a partnership between the Depot Days Festival and the Hartselle Kiwanis Club at 7 a.m. at Quail Creek Golf Resort and Convention Center. Cotaco School Reunion- If you attended classes or worked at Cotaco School from 1937 to 2016, please come and bring your family to the Cotaco School Reunion on Sat., Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. The reunion is located at Gurley’s Soggy Bottom in Florette (near Brewer High School). There will be entertainment, free activities for children and the admission is free. For a pork or chicken salad or a pork or chicken plate and a drink, the cost is $10. The Morgan County Extension Office will hold a three part series on Creating Sustainable Landscapes at the Common Ground Community Garden, St. John’s Episcopal Church, (202 Gordon Drive, Decatur) on Sept. 16, 19, and 21.  The classes will focus on choosing plants to create a healthier landscape while reducing water usage, fertilizer and pesticide applications.  The classes are free, but pre-registration for each class is requested. Multiple Sclerosis Support Group- The group will meet on Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.

Sept. 20

Lunch and Learn Series: Mildred Nungester Wolfe and the Decatur Arts- Join us for a free program that will highlight the life, career, and art work of Mildred Nungester Wolfe and her impact on art in Decatur and the Southeast, including her painting of Eudora Welty that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. You bring your lunch and we will provide drinks and cookies. Will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Community Room at Decatur Public Library. For more information call 256-353-2993 ext. 106.

 

Sept. 21

Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher- Join the Friends of Decatur Public Library for a night of classical guitar music. Peter Fletcher performs over a 100 concerts every year. He performed a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in May of this year. This free program at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public and everyone is welcome. September Painting Party- This party will be held on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. The fee is $20 and includes all supplies. You may choose from a sunflower door hanger or a Welcome sign door hanger. This is a DIY class, step-by-step instruction is not provided. Please pay and register no later than Sept. 15.

 

Sept. 23

Read to a Therapy Dog at Decatur Public Library- This program, courtesy of our friends at the Decatur Alabama Kennel Club, encourages children to read by providing non-judgmental, furry friends to listen to them practice reading. Bring in your reluctant reader to give them a chance to practice with a new canine friend. Advanced sign-up encouraged but not required. Will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Youth Services Department. For more information call 256-353-2993 ext. 122.

 

Sept. 26

Hartselle Shining Stars Softball League- This league is open to male and female athletes with special needs. Players must be at least 6 years old by Sept. 26. There is no age limit for this league. Games will be played every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 26 at Grady & Margie Long Complex. There is no cost for athletes. The league will provide jerseys, game day refreshments for athletes, equipment and end of the season medals. We are currently seeking volunteers for the following positions: coaches and player assistants. There is a $15 fee to volunteer. This fee covers the league t-shirts and other expenses. All volunteers must attend one of two training sessions. All players and volunteers need to be registered no later than Sept. 1. Call the civic center if you are interested in making a monetary donation, donating equipment, or if you are interested in becoming a team sponsor.

 

Sept. 28

The Lawrence County Extension Office will hold its monthly Lunch and Learn Gardening Series on Thursday, Sept 28 from noon to 1PM.  The topic is ‘Plants to Attract Wildlife to Your Backyard’. The class will be held at the Lawrence Co Ext. Office (13075 AL Hwy 157, Moulton).

Sept. 30

Hartselle High School will host Rhonda Vincent the Queen of Bluegrass on Sat., Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door; $20 in advance and $25 at the door and $25 in advance $30 at the door.

Oct. 1

Forrest Chapel United Methodist Church, many hands will be needed for the 3rd annual Hands on Hartselle and Beyond event. This day of service will take place on Sun., Oct. 1. The event is a way for area churches to come together and meet the needs of individuals while connecting with the community. Some of the projects scheduled for the day include working at area schools and pantries, visiting nursing homes and volunteering at the Disaster Warehouse. Oct. 7

The annual Massey School Reunion/Massey Community Reunion will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 7 at the Massey Volunteer Fire Department,  212 Evergreen Road, Falkville, AL 35622 (located in the Massey Community). Anyone who has ever lived in Massey, attended school there, worked at the school, taught there, or lives in the community now, are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

Oct. 14

The Grace Resource Center Library of Fairview Church on 4511 Danville Rd. Decatur, Al will be having its second annual fundraising luncheon on Sat., Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a door prize for each person attending and an excellent meal served. Two internationally known authors will be guest speakers. All funds raised will go to fund a Bible translation for the Ma’adi people of Uganda. There are more than 500,000 of them who have never had one verse of scripture in their own language. The tickets for the event are only $20 per ticket or a table for 8 at only $130 a savings of $30. The ticket includes the dinner, many nice door prizes and gift cards donated by area businesses and an opportunity to bid on silent auction items. Tickets are limited so call ahead and reserve yours or get a table for your family or group. The ticket price is 100 percent tax deductible as we are a non profit. All month

Hartselle Aquatic Center hours of operation are as follows: Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. 10 a.m. -6 p.m., Tue. and Thur. 10 a.m. -8 p.m. and Sun. 1 p.m. -6 p.m. Admission prices will be $10 for ages 13 and older, $8 for ages 6-12, $5 for ages 3-5 and ages 2 and under is free. Aerobics- Ladies, join instructor Mellonie Chappell, on Mon., Wed. and Fri. at the civic center at 8 a.m. for a refreshing morning workout. The class is suitable for all ages. Please bring a mat for floor exercises. Any additional equipment is provided. The fee is $25 per month.

Tumbling- This class, instructed by Mellonie Chappell, is designed for children ages 5 and older. They will learn basic tumbling skills. Classes will be on Mon. from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m at the civic center. The fee is $40 per month.

JMK Martial Arts- Join JMK Martial Arts & Fitness at the Hartselle Civic Center and build a more confident you! Exciting martial arts and fitness classes are available for kids and adults. Classes are divided into age groups as follows; Pre-Kubs (ages 3-4), Lil Kubs (ages 5-7), Kid Kubs (ages 8-10), Jr. Kubs (ages 11-14) and adults (ages 15 and older). Baton- Kim Robertson, a former University of Alabama Crimsonette, instructs girls ages 5 and older in the basics of baton at the civic center. The fee for this class is $50 per month. Classes meet on Thur. afternoons. Call the civic center for more details.

Hartselle Public Library offers Preschool Storytime every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Senior Nutrition Center, also called the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, informative chats and so much more. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registered participants are welcome to stay for lunch provided by the Commission on Aging. Falkville VFW, located at 784 Culver Road, hosts bingo every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 256-784 5747.

 

Priceville Palace hosts a big band swing dance with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Hindsight is featured. A free couples dance class is held on the first and third Saturdays from 6 to 7 p.m. You do not have to have a partner to participate. For more information, call 256-353-4362.

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 2214 hosts a dance every Tuesday from 7-10 p.m. at 112 Veterans Drive in Cullman with the “Always Country Band” featuring Jerrold Burns from Country Boy Eddie’s Band. Admission is $4. For information, call 796-9111.

 

The Hartselle Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays at 8 p.m.; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Friday meeting is a smoking meeting. All mothers of active duty reserve or honorably discharged military service members are invited to attend monthly meetings of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. The Morgan County Chapter meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle.

 

A cancer support group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Pleasant Place building. Any person with any type of cancer is invited to attend. For more information, call 784-5694.

A Multiple Sclerosis meeting will be at the Sparkman Civic Center every fourth Monday of each month, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 2. For more information, call Susan  at 256-502-1221.

The Hartselle Hope AL-Anon Family Group, located at 527 Sparkman St. in Hartselle, meets Mondays at 8 p.m., Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m., Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Ala-Teen Family Group meets Fridays at 7 p.m. For more information, call 1-888-425-0775.

Hartselle’s Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at noon at the Freight House Restaurant.

 

Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center. Weight Watchers classes meet on Mondays at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center with weigh-ins beginning 30 minutes prior to each meeting. Call 1-800-651-6000 for more information.
