Somerville receives two grants

The Somerville Town Council met Monday night to discuss the awarding of two grants given to the community by the state, among other agenda items.

Mayor Kenneth Tucker said they were really excited to receive the two grants, one being $2,500 and the second $5,000.

“We hold an annual event every year around May, and this time it will be to celebrate the Bicentennial of Alabama, for 200 years being a state,” Tucker said. “The $2,500 will go to that because we are one of the oldest towns in the state. We will use that toward the celebration that we have every year.”

The second grant was received from the Alabama Historical Commission in the amount of $5,000.

“We will be using that grant for repairing and revamping our courthouse,” Tucker said. “The Somerville courthouse is the oldest courthouse in the state. We are really excited to begin this process on the courthouse.”

The Town of Somerville is also in the process of building a Farmer’s Market location, with hopes to have it finished in the near future.

In other business the council:

•Heard the finance and police reports for September.

•Approved a resolution for a one-time pay raise for retirees.

•Moved the court date to the second Thursday rather than third Thursday.

•Paid monthly bills.
