Nelle Payne – Oct. 23, 2017
Doris Nelle Payne, the youngest daughter of Robert Andrew and Dora Plemons Payne, died Oct. 23 at Decatur Morgan Hospital. Miss Payne was born Jan. 30, 1923, in Hartselle. Following her graduation from Morgan County High School in 1940, she continued her education at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University), where she graduated in 1944. She began her career as a secretary at Courtland Air Base and later at Wolverine Tube in Decatur before moving to Dallas, Texas, to work at Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation. She also worked at Thiokol in Woodbine, Ga., and in Huntsville and retired from IBM in Atlanta, Ga.
She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age, trusting His love and care for her, and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Hartselle, supporting it and its missions outreaches.
“Aunt Nelle” loved her family and was especially close to her nieces and nephews. She was a loyal friend, visiting and staying in touch with those from her childhood as well as new ones she made throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, travel and, in recent years, playing Bridge with friends.
Miss Payne is survived by her sister, Gwendolyn Payne Wesson; her niece, Jane Turney and her husband, Doug; her nephew, Bob Wesson and his wife, Bobbie, all of Hartselle; her grandnephews and grandnieces, Richard Preston Turney and his wife, Penny, and their sons, Payne Keith Turney and Arthur Douglas Turney, of Springville, Alabama; Carol Ann Turney, of Nashville,
Tenn.; Clay Edward Wesson, of McMinnville, Ore.; and Elizabeth Anne Wesson Limbaugh and her husband Patrick, of Birmingham.
A funeral service for Miss Payne was held at Peck Funeral Home Chapel Oct. 26 at 11 a.m., with Bro. Charles Shaddix and Bro. Clayton Speed officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorial gifts be made to First Baptist Church, Hartselle, or the charity or ministry of your choice.
