HCS board approves field trips, sets school calendar

The Hartselle City Schools Board of Education met Jan. 23 and approved two out-of-state field trips and events for students during springtime as well as approved the 2018-2019 school calendar.
Hartselle Superintendent Dr. Dee Dee Jones said she and the board are extremely proud of the students involved in these trips and also the band for their successes.
“This is another way to enrich learning experiences for our students,” Jones said. “Part of our strategic plan is equipping all students with learning, leadership and life skills. I think trips like these are a great opportunity for our students.”
- The board approved the following out-of-state field trips:
Hartselle High School band to travel to Washington, D.C., March 14-18 to perform at the World War II Memorial and visit other historic sites.
Hartselle Intermediate School fifth-grade gifted classes to travel to Atlanta, Ga., April 6-7 to participate in the Night Crawlers overnight program at ZooAtlanta.
In other business the board approved the request from First United Methodist Church of Hartselle for the use of three buses for their Discovery weekend, Feb. 3.
The board also approved the following personnel items:
- Leave request: Kate Dupuis, choral director at Hartselle High School, for FMLA leave April 30 through Sept. 17.
- Resignation: Kelly Weaver (retirement) from the position of elementary teacher at Barkley Bridge Elementary School, effective Feb. 1.
- Employment: Larry Long as a part-time bus driver, effective Feb. 1, and Luke Southerland for the position of instructional aide based at the central office (to be assigned to schools), effective Feb. 1.
- Supplements: Ross Lewis, special education teacher at Hartselle High School, to provide individualized homebound instruction for an eighth-grade student, and Erica Griffin to serve as part-time instructional partner effective Jan. 3 through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
- Substitutes: Jessica O’Neill as a long-term substitute to fill the upcoming leave for a teacher at Crestline Elementary beginning Jan. 22 for approximately six weeks and Emily McMurry as a long-term substitute to fill a vacancy at Barkley Bridge Elementary from Feb. 1 through May 25.
- Volunteer: Arin Eddy to be a volunteer girls’ golf coach for the 2017-2018 golf season.
The next board meeting will be Feb. 21 at Hartselle Junior High School at 7:15 a.m.
