Morgan County schools perfect in Sub-Regional Round

Hartselle 59 Jackson Olin 52

HARTSELLE – A second-half surge propelled the Hartselle varsity girls to a 59-52 win over Jackson Olin on Monday night advancing them to the Northwest Regionals at Wallace State on Friday morning.

Anna Mathis – the Lady Tigers only senior – made the most of her final home game. She poured in a team-high 18 points and with Hartselle standout Moriah Taylor in foul trouble early, Mathis carried the offense for the Lady Tigers during crucial stretches in the game.

“This was the last game I will ever play on this floor,” Mathis said. “Now we get to go to Wallace (State). We will have to keep working on our defense and limit our turnovers. (Jackson Olin) was living off of our mistakes in this game so we need to clean that up.”

“Anna came through in some tough situations for us,” said head coach Gary Orr. “She played great and we needed her to play great for us to win. This will be a big challenge for us. We are going to do our part and hopefully go down there and play to the best of our ability.”

A return trip for the tradition-rich program will happen Friday morning as the Lady Tigers will take on Hazel Green. Hartselle and Hazel Green will play at 12 p.m.

Brewer 45 Clay-Chalkville 38

SOMERVILLE – After being held to just 12 points in the opening half, the Brewer varsity girls found their offense in the second stanza and advanced to the Northeast Regional in Jacksonville with a 45-38 win over Clay-Chalkville.

Clay-Chalkville focused on taking away Montevello-signee Shyan Flack’s offense early on, leading to opportunities for other Lady Patriots to take over. Guards Jacie Andrews and McCarley Northway stepped up with 13 points each to lead their squad.

Andrews went 3-4 from distance as her squad overcame a tough shooting night. Brewer – the No. 8 team in 6A – will take on Homewood in the opening round of Regionals at 12 p.m. on Friday.

Danville 56 Winfield 47

WINFIELD – Junior guard Jolee Cole poured in five three-point shots on her way to a team-high 19 as the Danville varsity girls advanced to the 4A Northwest Regionals with a 56-47 win at Winfield on Monday night.

The Lady Hawks outscored Winfield 19-9 in the fourth quarter to break open what was a closely-contested matchup.

Callie Ryan finished the game with 13 points while Jordan Hinkle was also in double figures with 11. Danville will take on Good Hope on Saturday in the first round of the Regional Tournament. The time is still to be determined.

West Morgan 46 Hanceville 43

TRINITY – In a thrilling back-and-forth contest on Monday night, the West Morgan varsity girls advanced the 3A Northwest Regionals with a narrow 46-43 victory over Hanceville.

Brie Evans carried the offense in the first half pouring in 12 of her team-high 16 points in the opening two quarters. Bailey Parrish was held scoreless through the first three periods but came through when her team needed her most. All 12 of her points came in the final quarter as the Lady Rebels held on for the win.

The Lady Rebels will take on Lauderdale County in the regional round on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Priceville 77 Haleyville 47

PRICEVILLE – The Lady Bulldogs dominated from start to finish on their way to a comfortable 77-47 victory over Haleyville on Monday night.

Priceville advances to the Northwest Regional at Wallace State on Saturday and will take on Deshler. The time for that contest is still to be determined.
