Residents want lower speed limits

Drivers on some roads near Sparkman Park may soon be required to slow down.
Hartselle City Council will be considering a resolution to lower the speed limit on Hayes, Adams and Madison Streets and Groover Road from 30 to 25 miles per hour.
Concerns about the speed limits on the roads were expressed by area residents Melissa Miller and Laurel Hummel. The women said fast traffic in the area was a danger to children who cross the street to go to Sparkman Park.
"What does it take? A child getting hit?" Miller asked the council.
Some on the council, however, said they thought the city needed a general speed policy, as opposed to adopting rates in a piece-meal fashion.
A traffic survey was conducted in the area and new caution and speed limits signs were put up in the area.
Council attorney Larry Madison is drafting the ordinance, which the council could take up as soon as its next meeting, scheduled for Aug. 27.
