MUSCLE SHOALS – When the clock expired in Brewer's last second 29-23 win over Muscle Shoals last Friday night, Patriots back Travis Boyd raised his arms and did a little victory dance for the first time this season. It marked the end to a disheartening 16-game losing streak and the players reveled in their newfound success.
"It's the greatest feeling in the world, what a way to get your first win. I've been here two years and this is my first win. We're going to enjoy this one," Boyd said, who threw the winning touchdown pass to Nick Morris with six seconds left in the game on a fake field goal.
But Boyd almost didn't get the opportunity to throw that pass.
Trailing 23-21 Brewer faced fourth and 18 at their own 21-yard line with 3:08 left. Punter Larkin Morris boomed a 48-yard punt to get field position back in Brewer's favor. After a stand by the defense, Brewer took over at the Muscle Shoals 47 with 1:00 left.
Quarterback Samuel Mason, who would rush for over 100 yards, took matters into his own hands. He hit Marcus Greenleaf on a 34-yard pass to the 16.
With no timeouts and 11 seconds left he scrambled to the 6 and stopped the clock by getting out of bounds. Blade Crawford lined up for a chip shot field goal, but Boyd took the snap, faked the hold, then rolled out to his right and floated a pass over two defenders into Morris' hands.
Mason's poise was one of the keys to the Patriots win. The junior quarterback ran the option flawlessly gaining 114 yards on 15 carries and hit 9 of 15 passes for 108 yards.
