Red Bay – Falkville ran up against the No. 2-ranked team in Class 2A Friday night and could not come away with an upset, as the Blue Devils fell 33-6.
Red Bay, coached by former Hartselle coach Dale Jeffries, has led his team to a 9-0 record, while Falkville falls to 1-8 with no wins in its region.
The Tigers got things going with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter when tailback Chad Holcombe ran for 62 yards and a touchdown. Kreg Kennedy scored the second touchdown for the Tigers when he ran the ball in from the six-yard line, giving Red Bay a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Jared Lawler and Drew Davis added a touchdown apiece in the second quarter, putting Falkville behind 27-0 at halftime.
The start of the second half started much like the second quarter. With 11:34 remaining in the quarter, Holcombe once again broke loose, this time on a 60-yard scamper, resulting in another touchdown for the Tigers. The PAT was not good. This run for Holcombe put him over a 1,000 yards for the season.
Jefferies later said "Holcombe could have easily run for 2,000 yards, but he wanted other players to get some yardage and experience". This was also the final score of the game for the Tigers.
With 8:45 left in the quarter, the Blue Devils added a little excitement with a touchdown of their own. Quarterback Todd Russell under threw Brandon Stiles. A Tiger appeared to have intercepted, when from behind, Stiles took the ball away and ran it in for a 66-yard touchdown.
The fourth quarter saw both teams rumble up and down the field without scoring. The Tigers used five different quarterbacks in the win.
