Danville – The Hawks entertained the Pirates from Winfield this past Friday night, but it was Winfield doing the most entertaining.
Danville fell to 0-9 with a 42-14 loss to Winfield. It was the most points the team has scored since scoring 16 in an opening-night loss to Falkville.
The Hawks looked to gain some momentum heading into next year with a good showing the final two games of this season but it was not to be on this night.
Winfield took the open kick-off and held the ball for almost four minutes before scoring on an eight-yard pass.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Hawks' Steven Biggans mishandled the kick and the Pirates recovered the ball on the Hawks' 29-yard line.
Fortunately for the Hawks, their defense toughened up and sacked the Pirates QB on second and third downs on the drive for a total loss of 15 yards. This took Pirates out of any possible field goal position and they ended up punting.
On the Hawks first drive, they picked up their initial first down of the night on a nine yard run by Brandon Hitt. Following A.J. Suggs' incomplete pass on third down, the Hawks were forced to punt.
The Hawks punt was fielded by the Pirates at their own 36 but fumbled. Danville recovered the loose football.
